Forum on Black gays stirs emotions

About 110 people attended an open forum about homophobia among African Americans on April 18 at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Gay marriage and whether black gays are accepted by other African Americans arose as the central issues of the two and a half-hour discussion, “The Tongue in Cheek of Black Homophobia: Gay Marriage, Religion, and the Closet.”

“I don’t think ‘black homophobia’ is any different from other homophobia,” said H. Alexander Robinson, a longtime gay civil rights and HIV/AIDS activist who serves as the executive director and chief executive officer for the National Black Justice Coalition, a relatively new gay civil rights group.

“In fact, I feel once educated our community is much more willing to accept the idea that discrimination is wrong and discrimination based on sexual orientation is wrong,” he said.
