Does anyone have any information on homosexuals and depression/suicide?
Hello all,

I don't post in this forum often. But I've been posting at DU since 2005, and up until recently have been an active poster. Lately I haven't been posting as much because I dipped into a severe depression. I'm in college, and let's just say I haven't been this low or felt this horrible since my freshman year in high school when I survived three different suicide attempts. After a few years of happiness after I came out, I quickly and suddenly went back into a severe depression. I guess it's tough walking up every morning and going to bed every night sad and unhappy. It seems no matter what I do, or no matter the circumstances, my depression remains consistent. And in the last two weeks, I've reached new lows. The fact of the matter is I'm already in credit card debit, currently working full time at a job I'm miserable at but where I'm in management and make decent pay and feel trapped. I currently don't have a car, and with the mounting credit card debt, I'm forced into working there. It is a horrible feeling to know you're working a job to raise the funds to get a new car, only to turn around and have to pay off credit card debt--which I'll admit was a huge mistake on my part.

This stress of money stacked on top of my severe depression has left me suicidal. Does anyone have any good information, stories or websites on/related to gay suicide and depression in the gay community?

Thanks,
K2008

3. Hang in there
I've been there before and know how tough it is. Just be sure to get some help as soon as you can. Here's a web site that has a lot of good information and good advice from members.

Good luck and take care.

4. I don't have any links or statistics handy
But I remember reading that, at least among gay teenagers, they're three times more likely to attempt or commit suicide than heterosexual teens. I don't know how that translates into adult numbers.

Depression is a hard road to walk on, gay, straight, or whatever though. You're definitely not alone on this board in either case. I don't want this thread getting locked for "dispensing medical advice", but if you can't afford medical treatment right now, or probably pharmaceuticals, you may want to try a natural supplement called 5-HTP. It's a natural anti-depressant and I can honestly say it saved my life when I was in a place about as dark as where you are now.

I hope you have supportive friends and family you can talk to. Since you brought this up in the context of being gay, I would ask if you're out to your family? I don't know your circumstances there, but it's easier to talk to people about shit like this if you can be completely honest with them.
