KCMO District Announces $13M Incentive Program
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City, Mo., School Board announced a major incentive program for teachers on Monday morning at the district's headquarters.

Superintendent John Covington announced that the district will be receiving a $13-plus million federal grant over the next five years to pay for the incentive program that will reward effective teachers and for teacher recruitment.

The Kansas City district was one of 62 districts selected to receive the grant money. Covington said Kansas City's application was among the top five recipients.

Under the plan, teachers, administrators and schools are eligible for up to $10,000 in bonuses for goals achieved. Officials said they will be planning the specifics of the program this year and the incentives will be available starting in the 2011-2012 school year. The district plans to try the plan in 10 trial schools.

"I don't want you to think this is a silver bullet, because its not," said Andrea Flinders from the Kansas City Federation of Teachers. "But there are a lot of good things on this plan."
