5. This was how that $10 billion is to be divided up.
Arne wants it all for his RttT and charter school scam. Obey wants part of the money to go to recalling teachers who were riffed. This is hardly grandstanding - it's recognizing what is in the best interests of students. Laying off teachers means ballooning class sizes. I hope you would agree that this is a noble effort - or do you think that 40 students in a science lab is somehow acceptable?

19. ALL?

That's a wee bit of stretch . . .

At issue is a $10 billion bill (down from $23 billion) to help states prevent devastating teacher layoffs. (The House approved the bill after this column was written on Thursday.) Without the money, we’ll see larger class size, four-day school weeks in more areas, and about 100,000 lost jobs, which in turn will strain services and harm the economy.

. . . In January 2009 Obey already reduced Obama’s early reform proposal from $15 billion to $5 billion. That was out of $100 billion in the stimulus bill for education, most of which went to prevent state and local teacher layoffs last year. To simplify the math, Obey wants to cut from the terrific 5 percent of education spending devoted to exciting reform proposals, not the 95 percent that went for other things.

6. No matter who is in charge--Repub or Dem, this
country will be screwed up forever. Pitting students against teachers somehow seems to be nuts. Raise taxes now! That is how we have always funded our country. Republicans do not want more taxes--they want our youth to be stupid. They do not want to pay teachers who have dedicated their lives for our children. I am so fed up.

13. the best way to protect the class system is to make sure that a good education is out of reach.
out of reach except for those who can afford private school. privatization was a suckass idea under Bush, and it's still a suckass idea.

14. This system that they are proposing is nearly identical
to the one set up under Pinochet in Chile. I'd think that would be a huge red-flag to even the most moderate Democrat. But evidently I was wrong...

20. you don't get it do you -
some charter public schools can provide the same "private school" education - FOR FREE to ANYONE. Just ask all those inner city kids in Chicago who just graduated and accepted to college. Where do you think they would be right now, if they had not have had this school to attend? Do you really believe they would be graduating highschool and about to enter college?

evan bayh, in particular.

major proponent of cat food, too.

wait, i didn't see wyden. that does surprise me a bit, except that oregon is now cutting teachers en masse, so maybe it's connected to additional funding they might lose.
