2. From the wiki:
He then graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a bachelors degree in sociology in 1987. His senior thesis, for which he took a year's leave to do research in Kenwood, in inner-city Chicago, was entitled The values, aspirations and opportunities of the urban underclass. Though unpublished, it was later cited by other authors.

3. That should tell you how little Harvard should be regarded.
Duncan is a bigger idiot than G.W. Bush.

6. I know a lot of major assholes that graduated MCL.
That you can work a grading system doesn't indicate very much except your ability to work a grading system.

9. There's a big difference between being book smart and being people smart
Arne is book smart but he has no leadership skills. He doesn't know how to make people want to do what he wants them to do. That is bottom line basic for a school principal, not to mention a supt or a secretary of education.

I have worked with many educators who were more people smart than book smart. And they were far more successful professionals than the book smart ones.

Sigh. Arne is such a waste of energy.

that he felt fine about characterizing the "urban underclass".

You know, that's probably a very interesting document.

20. Empathy? Wow. . . do you know anything
about the guy? Google is syour friend. Hell, even WIKI ican be y our friend.

I'm not even really a "huge Arne Duncan fan" myself, but at least know who you're talking about!

various sources: take your pick:

Duncan was raised in Hyde Park, a Chicago neighborhood encompassing the University of Chicago. His father Starkey Duncan was a psychology professor at the university and his mother Susan Morton runs the Sue Duncan Children's Center, an after school program primarily serving African-American youth in the nearby Kenwood neighborhood. While growing up, Duncan spent much of his free time at his mother's center tutoring or playing with students there.

He then graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a bachelors degree in sociology in 1987. His senior thesis, for which he took a year's leave to do research (and tutored Chicago kids) in Kenwood, in inner-city Chicago, was entitled The values, aspirations and opportunities of the urban underclass. Though unpublished, it was later cited by other authors.<2><3><4>

As a student in Chicago, Duncan spent afternoons in his mother's tutoring program and also worked there during a year off from college. He credits this experience with shaping his understanding of the challenges of urban education.

From 1987 to 1991, Duncan played professional basketball in Melbourne, Australia . . . while there, worked with children who were wards of the state.

n 1992, Duncan became director of the Ariel Education Initiative, a program to enhance educational opportunities for children on Chicago's South Side.

Prior to joining the Chicago Public Schools, Duncan ran the non-profit education foundation Ariel Education Initiative (1992-1998), which helped fund a college education for a class of inner-city children under the I Have A Dream program.

19. true, that.
But they were indicating he was stooopid.

And from what I understand, one of the reasons GWB kept getting elected was his "people skills" - you know - the guy people wanted to "have a beer with". People who knew Bush, LIKED him 'cause evidently to some, he was a "likable kinda guy". . .

7. Thanks. I thought I read somewhere that he only had a degree in Sociology.
That sucks. So basically, his only qualification to rip public education apart is that he is tall and can play basketball.

By this logic, since I have a Masters in Education and am a National Board Certified teacher, I would be more qualified. Also, my son can play ball at least as well as Arne. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that free public education would be destroyed by a democratic administration.

8. Congrats on your Natl Board Cert!!
:toast:

Our district withdrew the funding so I didn't do it. First they said they would pay for it. Then they wanted us to pay up front and get reimbursed once we finished. But there was no plan to pay us any additional salary. And we were worried they might not even have the money to pay us at the end of the year.

So none of us did it. I was really excited about it. Looks like a wonderful experience.

11. Thank you:) I am very happy I was able to certify back in 2002. There were
so many excellent teachers who helped me with the process. That is what education is really all about. If the government really wanted to reward teachers who strive for excellence in the classroom, they would not have to look any further the the NCBT program. Unfortunately, they are not out for excellence, but they are interested in profit for themselves. Once again the rich get richer. Only this time it will be at the expense of our children and our nation.

connected friends, one of whom gave him his first gig after his sports career, which led to his gig for mayor daley, which led to his gig with obama.

26. "His senior thesis, for which he took a year's leave to do research in Kenwood..."
What bullshit. Arnie took a year off from college to go home, shoot hoops, and write a college paper. And his supposed time at his mother's child care place in Kenwood simply provided the opportunity to build a narrative his promoters have used to justify an ex-jock with a BA in sociology running the CPS and then the Department of Education.
