Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge???
Will Obama speak at Blue Valley NW graduation?

Blue Valley Northwest High School has a chance to have President Obama as its commencement speaker this spring.

It was one of six schools across the country selected today as finalists in the Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.

The White House and Department of Education chose the schools. The point of the competition was for schools to show how they are preparing students for college.

The overall goal is to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world, according to the White House.

Good grief. And I though the Bush administration came up with some bizarre names for programs.

3. Argh.
"The overall goal is to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world, according to the White House."

Who cares if they really want to go to college - or should go to college - or if the degree they complete suits them? Just get them through high school and through some sort of college degree. Then the US will be the bestest nation ever!

Education should be a journey, not a goal. A life style, not a means to an end.

And now they're turning it into some giant version of a game, with schools as the contestants and students as the playing pieces.

go, usa . . .

:banghead:

5. Working class districts will not have a chance to have the honor of his

presence.

...........The application’s four essay questions focused on demonstrating how the school is helping prepare students to meet the President’s 2020 goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. Applications were judged based on the school’s performance and dedication to providing students an excellent education that will prepare them to graduate ready for college and career choices. Each question had to be answered in full to qualify and data that substantiates each answer is strongly encouraged.

In addition to the required essay responses, applicants were invited to submit the following optional supplemental materials:

* A video -- no more than 2 minutes in length -- showing the school’s culture and character and highlighting how it is a model of educational success for other high schools around the country.
* Supplemental data on key indicators such as attendance, student achievement, graduation rates and where available, college enrollment rates. This data may be presented in the form of tables, graphs or spreadsheets and should be used to help the school make the most compelling arguments possible.
