About 100 protest University of Nevada, Reno, education department cuts

Doctoral studies may be a thing of the past there:

Nearly 100 people rallied outside the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno on Wednesday to protest the proposed elimination of doctoral degrees in various speciality programs.

On the heels of the Legislature's special session, university officials proposed dropping programs and closing schools to absorb the mandated $11 million in budget cuts.

To help accommodate the cuts, the university plans to focus on preparing undergraduates at the college to be licensed and certified to teach in Nevada and to offer bachelor's and master's degrees for teachers, principals and child and family development professionals, while closing all the doctoral degree programs.

Some students and staff said after the rally that ending the doctoral studies would ripple into the Washoe County School District, where many of the students work in the classrooms, operate literacy programs and help with professional development.
