This has been one of those years when I think I should be writing a book
Today at school an 8th grader motioned me over and asked me an interesting question. He wanted to know if I had been mugged in the parking lot. I said "Excuse me?" He said "Aren't you Mrs. XXXX?" I said yes I was. And he repeated "Were you mugged in the parking lot?" I said no I wasn't. He said "Yes you were, you were mugged and they took your purse." I said "I don't carry a purse." He said "No, because they stole it". I said "Who stole my purse?" He said "I ain't sayin no more".

So later when I was talking to two of the girls in this class who seem to like me, I asked them why this kid would want to know if I had been mugged in the parking lot. One girl's eyes got very big. She said "What exactly did he say?" I said he asked if I had been mugged in the parking lot. She said "Mrs XXXX, he's scoping you out!" The other girl said "Yep, he is probably going to tell someone to mug you in the parking lot!"

Then I decided to talk to another 8th grade student. I asked her why this kid would say that to me. She also appeared alarmed when I reported what he had asked me. She said "Well he has cousins and that's what they do." I asked her what she meant. She said "Everyone in this neighborhood knows his cousins and knows that's what they do. That's how they live. They rob people." She said the same thing the other girls had told me, that he was checking me out so his cousins could rob me.

I asked her why they would want to rob me. She said they would want my car if it was nice. I said no it wasn't a nice car. Then she said "Well it's your phone then. They want your phone. You know that's a really nice phone, don't you?" I said yes it was expensive. She said "Well if I were you I'd be keeping that phone in my pocket where no one can see it. Everyone in this neighborhood knows his cousins and knows they crazy cause they rob people."
