Change.gov needs to hear from teachers and students about NCLB.
Everyone needs to get over to the new website and let the president-elect know how we feel about NCLB. Send it to everyone you know who hates NCLB, and tell them to write in as well. The man wants to know what our issues are; let's not disappoint him!

1. Forwarding this
to my two sisters, the teachers. They both hate NCLB with the heat of a thousand suns.

3. I posted my opinion of NCLB there
It quite literally drove me away from teaching as a career, until I recently realized that I might be able to cross over to Canada and teach there.

The letter I sent is probably too wall-of-texty to post here, but I'll post the gist of it.

"I wanted to teach high-school level social sciences when I declared my major in college in 2003. The No Child Left Behind Act eliminated that dream, by de-emphasizing social sciences in favor of reading and math in schools. Now this country faces a shortage of math teachers, but aspiring teachers who want to teach other subjects, such as social sciences, art, and music, are out of luck...

Every day, it becomes clearer to me that I would be better off living abroad, if I can get a visa. (If I am willing to teach in Nunavut, I probably can.) There is nothing left for me in the United States, except the hope that one day, when educational concerns are better balanced and I need not fear HMO medical directors denying a claim and leaving me to die, I will be able to return."

(It should also be noted that it took me a few years to realize NCLB's effects. When it passed, I was still a junior in high school.)

This week is busy; I'm going to spend some time communicating to our leaders next week, when I have time to catch my breath.
