GRE question
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 02:10 PM by Duppers
My son just missed the GRE-Physics signed up date by 2 days.

Does anyone know his chances of getting to take it on 'stand-by' status?

The next one is not until next April, which will shoot his chances of starting grad school next fall. He's devastated.

Any info appreciated. Thanks.

1. call ETS!
found online:
According to a customer service rep from ETS, you can call ETS to find out if anyone canceled for the upcoming exam at your test center. You should also inquire as to how many people have registered for the exam. However, ETS's policy is not to provide extra tests, and I don't know when they mail the tests to the test center. Maybe an ETS supervisor would know.

3. I did exactly that, Ava.
He'll call first thing in the morning.

We're furious with him!

Hugs, honey. You're a jewel.

2. Is the physics test different from the other tests?
I took the GRE at Sylvan on a computer. It looks like it's given at a different testing center in my city but they still give computer-based tests. It wasn't given on a nationwide testing day -- I just made an appointment to take it. I would certainly check into that. If it's not being offered in your area, it would be worth it to travel to another city or state.

Good luck to your son! :hi:

4. thanks, Longhorn. Yes, the subject test are different.
and for many, they're given only on limited dates, unlike the regular GRE's.

I call Sylvan for their recommendation too.

5. Not all graduate programs
require the subject exam. He should check with the schools where he wants to apply to confirm that they require it.

6. Harvard and MIT do definitely require it.
thanks for the suggestion though.

He's in Boston right now, staying 3 days, visiting both schools.
