Poll question: What limitations would you like on legal hygienic abortions?
Edited on Wed Mar-31-10 06:58 PM by uppityperson
Women have different rights to abortions now dependent upon a number of factors, depending primarily on where they live. What mandatory limitations do you think right, would you like to see on legal hygienic abortion access?

Edited to add that "It is fine like it is now, minimal limitations early, more with later ones" wasn't worded very well, can be confused with the last "no restrictions", but in some states there are legal restrictions on late term abortions. Seems to me that that should up to the provider and the woman, but there are restrictions in some states.

1. I'd go with licensed providers only.
The whole point of the fight to legalize abortion was so that women would have access to safe abortions by trained medical providers.

2. By that I meant special licenses, not "just" OB/gyn or women's health care clinics
I don't think there is such a category yet, but can see them trying to make such a thing. You would have to go to a particular "abortion center" sort of thing, rather than "just" a trained medical provider. I see this a putting another step in the way of access, that sort of thing.

It wasn't worded well, sorry

3. In practice, no restrictions
But then you always have the lamebrain who says "you mean you'd kill a 9 month old baby!!!!!".

No, and neither would the mother. But I don't know how one could possibly survive politically without some sort of late term qualifier.

Repeal all abortion laws
By Joyce Arthur, Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada
October, 2007

No country needs to regulate abortion via criminal or civil law. All anti-abortion laws and restrictions, throughout the world, should be repealed as unconstitutional violations of women's rights and equality.

Anti-abortion laws kill and injure women, violate their human rights and dignity, impede access to abortion, and obstruct healthcare professionals. All abortion restrictions are unjust, harmful, and useless because they rest on traditional religious and patriarchal foundations. Only when abortion has the same legal status as any other health procedure can it be fully integrated into women's reproductive healthcare.

5. No legal restrictions. Period.
WHO is better qualified to preserve and protect a girl/woman's life than she and her doctor? Who?
