LINCOLN - State lawmakers gave first-round approval Thursday to a first-of-its-kind bill that would require extensive screening of women seeking abortions in Nebraska and hold doctors responsible civilly if a screening falls short.
Legislative Bill 594 cleared the first of three rounds of debate on a 34-7 vote.
Opponents spent nearly five hours detailing their concerns with the bill particularly what they described as its use of vague language and offering amendments they said would improve it.
But State Sen. Cap Dierks of Ewing, who introduced the measure, said he would not accept their suggested changes.

“I think the bill is in great shape,” he said. “I don’t think there are any amendments that would make it any better.”
Dierks called the proposal common-sense legislation.
