LINCOLN -- Abortion opponents turned out today for their annual protest of the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 ruling that legalized abortion.

Police and organizers agreed that about 5,000 turned out for the "Walk for Life'' march, which started at the State Capitol and ended at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Julie Schmit-Albin, executive director of Nebraska Right to Life, said abortion opponents are fired up by recent political events, including the election of President Barack Obama, who supports abortion rights, and the health care vote cast by U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb.

Nelson opposes abortion, but activists are upset with his vote for the Senate bill. They say the language on abortion and insurance coverage in that bill is not as strong as in the House version of the measure.

The biggest cheers during a rally outside the State Capitol came when Attorney General Jon Bruning said he believes proposed state legislation to ban abortion when the fetus can feel pain is constitutional.

1. Well, that would be the final month of gestation
because the brain structures to receive and interpret pain signals are among the last to develop and they're only partially developed by birth.

The pain of being born would send infants into shock, otherwise.

This fool needs an education. Medically ignorant people should never be in a position to make laws governing medical practice except in the most general terms.

2. Do we not teach biology
In school anymore? I'm always amazed how little these people know about gestation and at the rudimentary level, simple cell division. Dana ; )

3. It has nothing to do with hard science, and everything to do with their religious
beliefs. Another instance where presenting just the facts, ma'am, just won't cut it.

4. Schools don't require anything beyond the middle school
classes that sort of gloss over botany and zoology. It's quite possible to go all the way through school knowing nothing about hard sciences, especially life sciences and most particularly the human part of it all.

It sets people up to be suckers for all sorts of bullshit.
