BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Bellevue police officers have been given new information and intelligence about how to deal with possible abortion protests in the community.
Officers said that while they expect most of the protests to be peaceful, they are worried that some may not be.
Protests like those held in Wichita, Kan., during the 1990s could come to Nebraska after a local doctor said he would perform late-term abortions at his Bellevue clinic.
Dr. Leroy Carhart said he wanted to continue the work of Dr. George Tiller, who was shot to death in Wichita in late May.
Wichita police said that recent protests have been less dramatic than ones staged in the 1990s because officers learned some lessons from them. Bellevue Police Chief John Stacey said he sent his commanders to Wichita to find out what those lessons were.

"We felt it would be advantageous for us to learn from their experiences," Stacey said.
