Bill would require ultrasound before abortion

BY PAUL HAMMEL
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN -- A state legislator today proposed a new law that would require abortion doctors to show patients an ultrasound of the fetus an hour before performing an abortion.

The proposal, Legislative Bill 675, would be among the strongest in the nation, according to Julie Schmit-Albin of Nebraska Right to Life, because of the requirement that a doctor display an ultrasound.

Seventeen other states have similar ultrasound laws, but all except Oklahoma make it optional for the ultrasound to be shown, Schmit-Albin said.

Displaying the ultrasound would only be required in abortions where an ultrasound is used, but Schmit-Albin said that is the case in about 90 percent of abortions.

5. Every time I get another one of those sappy motivational emails from the resident Pro-Lifer at work,
I want to send her a picture of mutilated bloody Muslim children, Iraqis or Palestinians. I haven't done it yet; afraid she'd complain to our boss. But her idiot "Pro-Life" schmaltz is just as offensive to me as those pictures would be to her. I need to warn her, so she can choose to STOP sending me that crap before I get up the nerve to show her what Pro-Lifers did to innocent Iraqi children.

9. Use a new email account, made just for the targets of your propaganda.
You will get both the satisfaction of hurting others and the safety which can come from anonymity.

10. Unfortunately, she'd probably approve
Most of the forced birthers are warmongers who think that dead Iraqi children are a valid anti-terrorism measure.

3. Would all the sane people please leave Nebraska, Kansas,
and Oklahoma so we can put up a BIG TALL WALL and toss all the lunatics in there and let them eat each other alive? It shouldn't take long.

4. You don't need a doctor to induce abortion
You can go to the produce section of your local market. One thing these people need to understand is that it is unlikely that we will rid the world of all plants. Many of them are effective and safe and readily available.

Women need to wise up and relearn the old ways that continue to work after all these centuries.

15. I have heard
that the plant once used centuries ago to induce abortion is *extinct* so to speak. Abortion pill would be a decent answer to this but I have heard its much more painful and it takes a lot longer AND she'd still have to get an ultrasound to be sure it worked completely.

8. it would discourage more than rape
you would have little need for any abortions in that case

14. THis
makes no sense at all. If anyone should be looking at the ultrasound, it should be the physician to make sure he doesn't botch the abortion. There is no logical reason for making the woman view the ultrasound. They wouldn't make someone look at a colonooscopy/endoscopy why make someone view an ultrasound?

16. lunacy
The idea here is that pregnant women confronted with an ultrasound image of a fairly developed foetus will think "shit, that looks kind of human" and reject abortion on that basis.

If you think about that for a couple of seconds, you realise it's insane. Even if you're for restrictions on abortions, it is mental to draw the line on the basis of the appearance of the fetus. Stupid idea, I bet it becomes law.
