Washington Post Magazine - The Next Generation of Abortion Providers
I was reading this article with my mom this past weekend. It follows a "journey" of a med student who is considering a career in Ob/Gyn as an abortion provider. It's a fascinating article about abortion from the "insider" perspective, i.e. the doctors who perform them.

What they face was heart-breaking. What happens to them, in their hearts, seemed tragic. As someone who has had abortions, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude to the men and women who literally risk their lives, reputations and family well-being to provide this service. And I feel a sense of debt.

I hope that some of you have seen, or will read the article and share your thoughts on it.

A Hard Choice
A young medical student tries to decide if she has what it takes to join the diminishing ranks of abortion providers. The Washington Post Magazine, November 23rd, 2008.

2. Sadly, I think they will be few and far between.
My late gynecologist kept his practice going long after he wanted to retire because he said there were
so few doctors willing to give women the choice they deserved. The only way he finally stopped was
when he passed away....sadly. He was a wonderful person.

3. Interesting article
I did a rotation at an abortion clinic in nursing school in the late 70's. I found it very interesting.
We did preabortion counseling, medicated the women with valium, sat with them while they waited their turn, and assisted the doctor during the procedure, then we worked recovery. I don't know if they still send nursing students to do this these days. I somehow doubt it.

4. Not sure about nursing students.
The article does mention "externships" and that the med students can take a rotation at an abortion clinic. I would think that any nursing student interested in ob/gyn would be able to do so. Or, perhaps I should say, I would HOPE so.

Maybe this is another one of the things that NARAL needs funding to make possible.

5. it should be melded with urology
"Even in Maryland, where about 61 percent of voters approved a referendum guaranteeing abortion in 1992 and which has the fourth-highest abortion rate in the country, abortion is not taught in any formal lectures at the state's flagship medical school"

fetus in fetu, that leg & arm found in the skull of a living infant was really surprising, Nature is not perfect. There are far more sophisticated techniques to prevent pregnancy today, yet some are calling ALL birth control "abortion"-this should be confronted.

The emotional aspects (of anti-birth control)need to be forcibly removed. 72 hours, the basic time of fertility, the only time for copulation for those "living Biblically" also needs honest hashing out. The death penalty/anti-bc group needs to be honestly examined, they are also into making us all into vegetables, I think it is possible to smartly sculpt end-of-life laws that would prevent the scare-tactics that fundamentalists use; there are already laws in Scandinavian countries for end of life.

Family planning is as old as the story of Gaia-she asked all her kids to help her stop getting pregnant....Saturn, etc...very old story...
