Pregnant Woman Charged With Shooting Herself
"A woman who told police she had been shot in the abdomen was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with illegally inducing an abortion by shooting herself, resulting in the death of her full-term baby girl, police said."

Temporary job (so probably no insurance), 2 small kids to support. I can't even imagine how desperate you'd have to be to do that.

1. How many times are we going to hear this story in the coming months?

A big thank-you to the Republicans who put up Alito and the (individual) Democrats who refused to filibuster.

6. We've been hearing it already
Think of the case in Michigan where the teenage mother had her boyfriend hit her in the stomach with a baseball bat (both were charged) or the recently Alternet story from the front lines of abortion clinics in the south, where young women have been coming in after trying to induce abortion through such methods as douching with bleach. We shouldn't be surprised.

2. I can.
We all will, unfortunately after they finish taking away our reproductive rights.

A coworker's sister just had to find a babysitter, take leave from work and travel three states to have a late term abortion.

She was extremely ill to begin with.

Welcome to The United States of Jesusland, where we protect the rights of fetuses but could care less about the born.

8. ESPECIALLY women.
All women.

This is about control, people, not babies.

Don't let them make it about smiling cherubs and happy faced caucasian couples with houses in suburbia.

5. I truly hope that neither of my daughters ever needs an abortion....
...but I guess I've got to start saving $$ for them to go abroad to have one if necessary.

I wouldn't trust an american doctor to do it right. Not anymore.

The current leadership and 'elites' of america suck bigtime. They consider us as 'resources' to be 'deployed' as necessary and 'terminated' at will.

9. There will be another underground.
Count on it.

If you can afford to send your daughters abroad, that's great, but we will not go back to the way it was.

3. Sickening
but I wonder how many mothers find the glib suggestion "she should have put it up for adoption instead" an easy one to confront when they look at their own children. Which one would they be willing to send away to live with strangers they have never met, never seeing that child grow and with no right to know what happens to it?

My hope is that this poor woman gets the help she needs and that the courts butt out. This is an ugly situation all around, and it's only going to be repeated as abortion rights are attacked by well meaning but stupid people who can't think it all through.

7. the folks making those glib suggestions
rarely have suggestions for how the woman should pay the hopsital costs for delivery. I guess they figure women who can barely support themselves (or their families) should be happy to take on an additional $2,000-$10,000 dollars in debt so some random stranger can have a baby to call their own.

10. this is what people will do when they are poor and desperate.
this is about women -- and who owns their bodies.

this is about economics and forcing more of the poor to avail themselves of the services that conservative christians want control of.

this is about control.

so now what --they charge the woman -- and if convicted, a woman with two children goes to jail.

how christian.

11. Or how about the women out there that choose a man over their kids?
My gf's sister has had 6 kids, one died "crib death" wink wink. Her first born was taken from her as she was under age and couldn't take care of him. The next 2 the state came in and took them after it was reported that her bf was beating them, she refused to give up the bf after he was released from jail. The last 2 were put into foster care after she was busted on drug charges, her bf put his drugs in her hand bag, they got pulled over, he ran leaving her to take the rap. She later married the guy, then separated from him.She moved i with another guy, who the courts told her to get rid of because her 2 daughters didn't feel safe around him. Well after all was said and done, last month the courts put the 2 girls in permanent custody and she lost her rights s a parent. How many times will this play out?

12. If any of that is true, it has nothing to do with her "choosing" a man.
She shouldn't be allowed to have custody of her children if she cannot take care of them and/or abuses them.

NO abusive or neglectful parent should, regardless of who they choose as a partner.

13. She gets with abusers, she doesn't abuse. When CPA tells her to get out
of the abusive relationship or lose the kids she stayed with the abuser at the cost of her kids. I call her the reason some should lose all birth rights and mandatory birth control would be a good ideal.

15. Too bad she didn't live in Florida...
where it is not a crime for a pregnant woman to shoot herself in the stomach. As red as Florida is, abortion is protected in our State Constitution (meaning the Florida Constitution must be changed before any kind of law like SD's could be passed).

The facts of this case suggest that this woman was already a poor, single, black woman- pregnant again and desperate.. Just the kind of person that Conservatives love to bag on- and love to take assistance from.
