The absurd argument that the number of murders in this country demonstrates that things in Iraq aren't that bad is an abuse of statistics. It's beyond stupid.

A comment from Fweeperville in the totalitarian state of Wingnuttia:

"140 killed in four days in sectarian violence in Iraq = CIVIL WAR.
190 Murders in the US during this same four day period = business as usual."

Now try and follow along. Iraq has a population of 30 million. With me so far? The US has a population of 300 million. 10 x 140 = 1,400. Get it?

The denizens of Wingnuttia make this stoopid argument with distressing frequency. They also use it to show try and show that US military deaths aren't statistically that bad. That's even stupider. Really, folks, it's pathetic.

1. Whadda you expect?
They got no skin in the game, yet. My prediction is that by the end of the year all these armchair hooahs are going to get the shock of their frat boy lives when selective service starts up, they get drafted, and they find themselves - with a bewildered George Bush look on their faces - as they march toward the waiting C-141, C-130 or C-5.

3. ohh freepers...
Will you ever cease being such a source of amusement? They really do avoid logic at all costs. I remember one post, in the midst of the Mark Foley scandal, when one freeper made a comment along the lines of: "According to a recent study, over 75% of homosexuals have had sex with someone under the age of 18 at some point in their life." Apparently two gay 17 year olds having sex is proof that homosexuals are pedophiles.

Straight people do that too. I think most of us had sex with someone under 18 some point in our life.

4. Car Accidents
I've also seen the argument that 30,000 people are killed every year in the U.S. from auto accidents. But duh -- no one is dying from car accidents in Iraq! Some people have no logic.
