Has anyone fielded this question yet? How can one be opposed...
... to abortion in the belief that the unborn must be protected, yet be willing to make an exception in the case of rape?

2. I don't know.
I'm pro-women's rights, so I can't figure out that mindset.

3. Because
Rape and incest is more about control then sex, and the pro-lifers believe in the control of peoples lives more then anything else.

4. When the opposers want to protect the born, and that
includes soldiers in harm's way, then we'll talk.
On second thought, no we won't.

5. i can't-
and most die-hard 'pro-lifers' don't.

One Jehovias Witness i met said "rape is an act of violence and cruelty, and makes a victim. If the baby is aborted, it only makes ANOTHER victim".

He made a good point, i thought.
i think the notion is that carrying a pregnancy to term, when that pregnancy is a result of a traumatic, painful experience, and having to carry the reminder of that in such a ...tangible... visible way for nine+ mos. is adding cruelty to an already sad situation. But, even without a baby growing inside you, you don't forget, ever.

It's not anyone's decision but the person who has to live it.

ouch.ouch..ouch....

7. These exceptions indicate that they are really pro-choice
but only if they are the ones who get to decide what you are going to do and you better damn well do what they say they'd do in the same situation. But when push comes to shove, they might not even do that. How many so-called "pro-lifers" allow their own daughters to abort when a rape is involved? I recall someone on this board mentioning a so-called "pro-life" protestor walking her daughter in to get an abortion and then back out there vilifying other women the very next day.

Exceptions for rape? But how do you know? I'm not about to share my police report or the results of the examination in the emergency room with complete strangers.

Exceptions for life of mother? But again, how do you know? I'm not sharing my medical records with strangers. And what if too great a risk for me is not great enough for you? What if your refusal results in my death? Who does my next-of-kin get to sue? Can it go into a trust fund for the children who now no longer have a mother?

Strangers who do not have access to the information can't make an informed decision about your life. They have no access and better damn well never get that access. Furthermore, do they ever have to live (or die) with the consequences of their attempts to make your decisions for you? Will they raise your now-orphaned existing children? Will they babysit the newborn of a single woman? I'm sure we can all predict the answer to that one: No.

8. Because it's not that they truly oppose abortion for the sake of the
fetus but are opposed to the idea that women should be able to make choices. Their belief is that women are irresponsible and slutty and should be punished. If a woman's pregnancy is the result of a rape, it's harder to convince mainstream people that she should be punished, so they say they are trying to save the precious babies. The ultimate goal, of course, is to make abortion illegal for all cases including rape, incest, etc. because even a rape victim is *still* a slutty woman who deserves what she gets :sarcasm:
