Full screen editors
Well here is the deal, writers at times need a simple, minimalistic editors. Especially those that can do full screen. It is you, and your screen and your computer. There are a few free ones out there, and I can tell you right now that there are two favorites of mine. One is Q10. http://www.baara.com/q10/. This is a simple, no bells and whistles editor that also has a nice retro typewriter sound to it. It will count words for you and do a few other fancy tricks.

My second choice right now is WriteMonkey http://writemonkey.com/ Now the last one is light, fits on my thumb drive and I found it easier to do what I wanted it to do. It also counts how many words you have done and does have both print preview and print commands.
Now, neither of them will format into too fancy things, but that is not their goal. And if you are looking for a nice full screen editor that is fairly fast and easy to use on your windows machine, give them a whirl.

For Mac, look at Scriverner, and also Story MIll, neither is free...

I am just sharing a few things with my fellow writers. I may even try these two for writing the early drafts of the history of labor... just that they don't do footnotes, so will see how well that works. Perhaps as a very early just stream of consciousness but that is another story.
Oh and Q10 also does full function typewriter, as in no backspace if you want to go there...
