1. My dear Haole Girl...
I write because the words show up, and if I don't write them down, I get a little crazy!

And I'm already crazy enough...

It really is a compulsion.

And I enjoy doing it!

:hi:

Did you see my poem?

2. Thank you
Well said. I understand how you feel, I really do.

Just commented on your poem. :-) :hi:

3. Can't not. It would be like being willfully blind.
Besides, it's something I do pretty well that gets some reward.

4. Agreed.
I just simply love it. It's somewhere between an obsession and an addiction for me. I get really cranky if I have to go days without writing or at least researching a project.

5. I write therefore I am...
I write because it is an adiction...
I write because I love the words...
I write because I'm happy...
I write because I'm sad...

6. Because we are all writers. Some of us call ourselves that because we want
to say it as no other can. To do that well takes practice, but if your question is more about purpose, I find each view/story has the potential to precious, it becomes about how well you polish the intricacies.

There are many kinds of writing, the fiction is where I find the least nerve. Wild stories my mind has concocted that always involve supernatural elements. A dozen short stories, half as many books, and one story I don't see being told in less than three books. Creating language level to the loop has proved to be a challenge comparable to parenting, so I take refuge in producing the idealistic essays and poems I post here and hope it nudges me to better create and hopefully submit, which I've only done once in my 48 years.
I've published plenty of news pieces, but to be recognized as a unique storyteller is what stirs my recollection of something akin to drive.

Thanks for making me think about why, I've always just addressed the how.

9. Yeah, but how well do you know this "David Dvorkin" character?
He seems a little shady, if you ask me.

8. Because I make up stories in my head.
I've always done it, but I was too lazy to write them down until there were personal computers with word processing programs. You might say that WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS made me do it.

11. Well. ...
I reckon it's because I've become hopelessly addicted to food and shelter. Neither of particularly lofty proportions, mind, but at least basic necessities.

12. Because if I don't, I'll explode.
Writing has never been the hard part for me. I do 1,000 words a day no matter what. It's re-writing I hate.

I think I look at writing as throwing up. I just want to get it all out of me as fast as I can, and once purged, I have no desire at all to look at the vomit.

Might be the reason I have 4 boxes full of printed first drafts, and nothing else.

14. I write
to create? Well, no not really; ...well, maybe. It is more like a math problem to be solved; what combination works best to get the correct answer? I just recently started posting in the photography group because a few months ago I started taking pictures as a way to force myself to stop and look closer at the world around me.

I have been writing much longer than I have been taking pictures and I have always written to make myself stop and look closer at the world within me. I don't take any of it too seriously; just enough so.

When I started my present job (moving around the U.S.) I started a journal and was hoping to do something with it. In Miami, my computer was stolen with all of my writings and photos and that set me on a pretty severe bout of depression. But I am back...

15. I've always loved photography.
In fact, I think I look too closely at the world. Maybe THAT is why I write... to retreat.

I'm so sorry to hear about your computer being stolen. That's awful.
