My niece has been accepted into U of Iowa's MFA program in writing!
She has been accepted into their "Writer's Workshop" which is a 2-3 yr program in creative writing that leads to a master's degree in fine arts. I am so proud of her - I hear it's very competitive. Sh wants to do literary translation, and will be a graduate teaching assistant in Spanish/Portuguese.

She is just finishing up her State Dept internship in Paris. I am SO proud of her!

Does anybody know much about this U of Iowa program?

1. AFAIK it's the most prestigious writing program in the country.
Wikipedia has the gee-whiz details.

2. Oh, my. Well, I'm not surprised. She taught herself to read at age 2
and took off from there.......

4. I was a Resident Assistant...
...for the floor of writers in the "Writer's Workshop" during the 1980's.

The U of I Writer's Workshop is the most prestigious writing program in the country, and it
is well-known internationally. Many talented writers--from around the world--have participated in
the program. Many Pulitzer and National Book Award winners have gone through the Writer's Workshop.

You are right, it is incredibly competitive. Your niece must be a fabulous talent!

How wonderful!

5. Its rated #1
very prestigeous, but I hear its kinda rigid and very competitive instead of suportive (good for some, not right for me).

6. She'll love Iowa City...
I was there 1973-81.

Culturally rich in many ways, town and gown nicely meshed.

Tell her to bundle up, though. Winters are long and severe there.

But the weather's the only drawback there is!

7. Bad weather is good writing weather.
Keeps you home with the headphones on and keeps
you from strolling down to the liquor store too often.

9. Alcohol is the lubricant? That's what I thought for the first 20 years.

Then it started gumming up the works and I quit.

I'm okay, Hamden. How are you?
