My essay just came out in the "Remembering James Welch" SAIL Issue..
It is Volume 18 Number 3 of the Studies In American Indian Literatures series.

Also available here:

The essay is called "A Tribute To James Welch" and is under William Wetzel. (ugh, I go by Bill, but who am I to complain? :) )

Also, I was told by the guest editor, Kate Shanley from the University of Montana, that it will be released later on in a larger project, in book form.

1. Congratulations, Bill!
After starting with "Fools Crow" I read all of his books.

Did you study with Welch?

Can you steer us to an electronic copy of your essay?

2. he grew up with my dad and uncles
His father was also a close family friend. I never met him in person, talked to him on the phone a few times. He gave me some advice on some of my work etc. He was interested in having me adapt "The Indian Lawyer" into a screenplay, so we had talked about that some.

I cannot find a copy online. I might post it to my myspace account for a few days, then delete it. But I have had people ask me about it without being able to find it online, and even though the publishers might not like it if I give it away for free, I would like more people to have access to it, so I probably will do the myspace thing. I'll let you know.

3. Congrats, Bill
Is this the first time that you've been published?

4. thanks
no, not the first time. I was part of a book project 4 years ago, had a few short stories in there, and I have had this essay and a previous one published in a magazine. Used to write for a paper as well, so I have a few under my belt. Looking to get a few more here soon. Plan on submitting lots of work here in the next month or so. :) Hopefully, in the next year or two I will finish my first book. :)
