http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?prov=ap&slug=ap-stallworth-pedestriankilled&type=lgns

He kills a man, reaches a confidential settlement with the family, pleads guilty and gets only 30 days.

Plax shoots himself in the leg and is looking at 3 years in prison

1. You can thank Mike Bloomberg for that.
Bloomberg has been all over this, since it happened. Mike and Mike were interviewing a former DA (i think) this morning, and he basically said the prosecutor is between a rock and a hard place with this one.

3. Plax is no longer a Giant, so I have no special interest
still I think Mike was way over the line on this one. That law was meant to take drug dealers and gang bangers off the street, not idiots looking for a little self protection.

4. As football fans we do have an interest. I still can't believe a guy
who shot himself will get major jail time. The embarassment of shooting himself should be enough! It not like he shot a guy in the face or anything.

Oh wait, that guy wasn't even charged with anything.

6. It's all where it happens. Had Plax been in a bar in AZ or TX
the whole thing would have just been one big joke.

5. Lets hope he gets a long suspension from the commissioner.
But I'm not hopeful. They don't seem to take DUI's seriously..look at Leonard Little...:(

7. But what about the children!
Serously, these guys are looked up to by kids...and essentially the guy is getting off with a slap on the wrist.

21. NFL suspends Browns WR Stallworth indefinitely
<snip>

"The NFL has indefinitely suspended Cleveland Browns receiver Donte' Stallworth, who killed a pedestrian while driving drunk.

In a letter to Stallworth, NFL commissioner Robert Goodell said Thursday the player's actions caused "irreparable harm to the victim and his family, your club, your fellow players and the NFL." He will not be paid while suspended.

Stallworth pleaded guilty this month to a DUI manslaughter charge for striking Mario Reyes on March 14 in Florida. He began serving a 30-day jail sentence Tuesday and has reached a financial settlement with Reyes' family.

After jail, he must serve two years of house arrest and spend eight years on probation. The house arrest provisions would allow him to resume playing."

9. The dude walking across a dark highway at night was as much or more to blame than Stallworth.
That's why the light sentence. It was an accident. It's not like Donte was wasted out of his mind and ran up on the pavement and killed the dude. Blowing a .08 is nothing, he wasn't drunk. Hell, .08 to me or any regular drinker is the same as being straight. He didn't run, he owned up to it and was genuinely remorseful. It's sad but it was just a tragic accident, could have happened to anyone.

12. He was drunk...if he wasn't drunk, his reaction time would have been
quicker...he was drunk, he was drunk, he was drunk.

13. No, he really wasn't.
And he wouldn't have been charged at all had it not been for the bare minimum breathalyzer requirement. A dead straight person would have hit this dude.

...it's Stallworth's fault.

16. Right because Stallworth, with malice aforethought, intentionally killed this guy.
And many others. And not only did he intentionally kill his victims but he heinously tortured them beforehand. And Mike Vick accidentally electrocuted, beat and drowned all those dogs for fighting poorly in the spontaneous fights they happened to get in.

19. 30 days is a joke.
A year would have been appropriate, maybe more. But there is a long standing legal tradition of buying your way out of transgressions, and Donte took advantage of it. Whatever his condition or impairment, it was an accident, and he is getting ten years probation (no drugs or alcohol, long after his career is done) and is giving up his driver's license for life. I agree, he should do more time, but I'm not that outraged by his sentence, either.
