Court Warner? QB chase magnifies ineptitude of the Niners front office
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jim_trotter/03/04/49ers/index.html?bcnn=yes

by Jim Trotter

As he made his way through the 49ers' training complex Monday, free-agent quarterback Kurt Warner told a member of the organization that his heart was a two-hour plane ride away in Phoenix. The admission didn't come as a surprise. Even before Warner boarded a private jet for the ride from Arizona to Northern California, the football world knew he wanted to re-sign with the Cardinals, who won the NFC West and nearly upset the Steelers in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco's brain trust apparently didn't get the memo.

The fact Warner left town, even after receiving what his camp says is a $30 million, two-year offer that includes $20 million in guarantees, is confirmation that 49ers president Jed York, general manager Scot McCloughan and coach Mike Singletary willingly allowed themselves to be used as leverage in Warner's attempt to secure more money from the Cardinals. Arizona had offered a $20 million, two-year deal that included $10 million in guarantees, all coming in the first year. That could change now.

The decision to court Warner was flawed on so many fronts that it's difficult to decide where to begin. For one thing it sent a mixed message to the players, fans and media about the blueprint for the future. Singletary, who had the interim tag removed from his job title in December, has spent the last few months creating the impression that he wants a physical, ground-based offense. Then the team brings in a quarterback like Warner, who is at his best using spread formations and throwing the ball around.

Maybe San Francisco was trying to hurt a division rival by giving Warner leverage to drive up his asking price with the Cardinals, which could negatively impact Arizona's salary cap in future seasons (provided there is a salary cap beyond this year). Unfortunately, I have a hard time giving McCloughan or anyone else in the organization the benefit of the doubt.

Since McCloughan arrived in 2005, the team has made one personnel mistake after another. The Niners have drafted only two impact players out of 35 picks in the past four drafts -- running back Frank Gore and linebacker Patrick Willis, with offensive tackle Joe Staley on the bubble -- and they willingly have given player agents the combination to their vault.

They overpaid for QB Alex Smith after selecting him No. 1 overall in 2005 and are still paying a price for that mistake. Ditto free agency. They overspent for offensive tackle Jonas Jennings, cornerback Nate Clements and defensive end/outside linebacker Justin Smith, and they tried to overspend on Warner, based on the numbers his camp has put out.

Once is a mistake. Twice is a trend. Three times is an explanation for six consecutive losing seasons.

..snip

Hmmm.

1. 49ers deny making offer to Warner

And yeah, the present ownership leaves something to be desired. Still the niners finished 7-9 last year (5-2 in their last 7)..at least they didn't lose 3 of their last 4 and choke away the playoffs like the 'Girls.

The 49er's future looks bright.

2. I wondered how long it would take you or cboy to respond.
The point of the article was not whether the 49'ers made an offer, but the fact that they were actually looking at Warner and what it says about their current QB's. Is this going to be their seventh consecutive losing season in 2009??

3. I expect the 49ers to battle for the division
Shaun Hill will no doubt start the season as the starter...nothing wrong with that. He's not a classic QB but he's been successful.

Kurt Warner can keep his God talk down in Arizona or wherever it is fundies hang out.

The NFC West is the weakest division in the NFC.

5. Not me
There's a new offensive game plan in the works dependent upon talent the 49ers do not have.

6. There seems to be little reason to have that sort of optimism
The 49ers have become a dysfunctional franchise. The type that changes coaches and systems, every few years. By doing that, they tend to negate the players drafted for the old systems. This ensures mediocrity, at least until they put a good management team in place and give them the time and the leeway to be successful.

7. And when the Cowchumps don't even get a wildcard again
this season, how many years in a row will it be they haven't won a championship despite the ability to do so on paper with their multitude of high-priced personnel? That's what's really embarrassing.

Who cares if Dallas has been barely more successful since our last Super Bowl thrashing of San Diego?

We're being held hostage by some of the worst football (owners) people in the league. Imagine if someone in the neighborhood bought their retarded kid an NFL team (Dallas) and put them in charge? There's no difference.

It's not our fault Eddie DeBartolo had the franchise unfairly stripped away from him, instead of being able to lead it to its 6th-7th-8th-9th and probably 10th Super Bowl wins by now. We were on our way to never losing .. to establishing an undefeated 10-0 record in Februarys.

Instead, the team was given to his bat-shit crazy sister and her human slug of a husband who doesn't know the difference between a hash mark and hash browns.

So first clean up your own failing backyard madinmaryland (who has no business rooting for Dallas), before you start bashing SF. :puke:

8. Ahhh. That old cboy is back!

Well, considering debartelo is the Steinbrenner of the NFL (Yes, steinbrenner should have been kicked out of MLB, too), its only right he was kicked out. Wonder how many of his championships were bought through his mob connections. It really makes a person wonder.

Ahh. The forty-whiners being run by the Yorks!! Will always bring a smile to this Cowboy fan!

9. Many people with intellectual disabilities are fairly serious fans
Imagine if someone in the neighborhood bought their retarded kid an NFL team (Dallas) and put them in charge?

The "R-word" is obsolete and is viewed by many in the disability community as an offensive slur along the lines of the N-word.

And on top of that, you associate these people with the Cowpies! :eyes:

BTW, why are they using someone with Downs Syndrome to promote this PSA?

It seems to me if they really want to drive home the point, they should use someone with a serious learning disability like trumad or:

Singletary will have a full season to work the kind of magic he showed in the second half of last year.

I bet you go into every NFL season thinking this will finally be the year the 'Girls win a playoff game.

How long has it been now?

Last 49er playoff win.....2002

Last Cowgirl playoff win...1996

I think those numbers speak for themselves.

Regular seasons mean little if it doesn't translate into playoff victories.

W-L .pct in the big game .. while we're picture PERFECT .. have been to the Super Bowl a whole two years more recently than SF. :eyes:

I can't speak for Upton, but I've gained a whole new level of respect for the Cowgirls. :sarcasm:

BTW, a team you have no license adopting as your own, since you're from Winnepeg or wherever you're from. It's far, far, far away from Dallas .. that's all I knwo.

point at hand.

Let me school you once again .. a herculean task by all accounts.

It would be politically incorrect to use terms like, "retarded," "pussy," "panties in a knot/bunch," "tits," "bitch," "hoe," etc., in other forums. I don't really have a problem here in the sports forum.

Certainly some do, but retarded is not necessarily a slur. It's description. Maybe not a welcome one, but it gets the point across, and I only use it when I'm dealing with very stupid people .. and most know I'm just having fun.

Now then, there are words that are NEVER acceptable -- especially on a Democratic board -- mostly all of them involve ethnic/sexual slurs (N-word, Jap, Faggot, Cunt, etc.)

And you asking whether I'm lovers with a straight DUer is in the same category as asking whether a black DUer shares their watermelon and fried chicken with someone else.

Tell me CBOY, do you share your fried chicken and watermelon with Upton. You'd do that?

One is homophobic and the other is racist.

But, homophobia can be overcome trumad.

We wish you well.

on edit: BAH, fixed some grammar
