World rod caught carp record broken
ANGLER Andre Komornicki set a new world record on Thursday after catching a carp weighing an incredible six and a half stone.

Despite its size it took just ten minutes to reel in the 91lb monster and put it in the net.

It has now been officially confirmed as the biggest mirror carp ever caught - but it was thrown back into the lake where it came from.

Mr Komornicki, a father-of-three from Stable Lane, Seer Green, landed his catch at the 25-acre La Graviers complex near Dijon, France at 10pm.

I've known Andre since we were only 5 years old in 1948. Got the 'phone call this morning to let me know about this.
If of interest it was caught on 17lb line using a 3 1/2lb test curve carp rod - 12' I'd guess.

1. Good for your pal
no mention of what kind of bait, tho I am guessing it is a secret? How did they certify the weight?

Pretty smart letting the fish back into a smallish lake, now he can catch it again on different line tests and reset alot of records.

He had a few beers, I would too!

2. No secrets about baits here

Andre would've used boilies which can stay intact for at least 3 days. Boilies will also withstand being picked up and dropped again by fish. Some details here : http://www.carp.net/carp.htm

Bait would also have been hair rigged i.e. not on the barb of the hook. http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/Rig-Section/Carp-Rigs/tie_hair_rig_knotless_knot.html Hair rigging goes back to the seventies and relies on the fact that carp suck bait in and blow it out if at all suspect - the barb catches them when they blow it out.

The owner of that lake , Luke Moffatt , is well known here for both carp and large catfish he's caught too in the both the French and Spanish slow moving rivers. Luke verified the weight. The fish has been caught before at lower weights but above 80lb. It's common practice here to name large carp which are ALWAYS returned to the water : as are infact all carp regardless of size. This one is called The Scar - that's due to a wound which happened when it got tangled in line some time ago.

Whenever I've mentioned carp fishing to American friends they've laughed ! Those hooligans in Canada fish for them with bows and arrows.

If you've never tried it then try fishing on the top of the water for carp. PM me if you want to know how to rig for that. It's huge fun.

edit - BTW the carp would not have been THROWN back. They're treated like babies out of the water and are then very carefully put back.

4. I've caught quite a few carp before
not grass carp though, in the bay of green bay and the fox river, there are carp. I think they are called golden or asian carp. We would "seed" an area with a can of yellow corn, and then go back the next day using corn for bait. Get them evry cast. the watre was toxic back then so it was back they go or flower food for them.

They would also surface feed and I would catch them with a fly rod drifting bread on the surface. Lil' pups around 3-4 lbs. Lots of fun as you say.

I've seen the grass carp in the retention ponds down here. I think they are a restricted species tho.
