Texas on top in 1st BCS standings
<snip>

"The grid is set for the race to the BCS national championship game.

Texas holds the pole position and Alabama is second. Penn State joins the Longhorns and Crimson Tide in the front row, but the Nittany Lions already might have too much ground to gain.

The Longhorns were way ahead of the field when the season's first Bowl Championship Series standings were released Sunday — as expected. Texas appears to be in position to play for the national title on Jan. 8 in Miami if it can stay unbeaten. The top two teams in the final BCS standings play for the championship.

Texas is an overwhelming No. 1 in the USA Today coaches' poll and the Harris Poll, and rated first in each of the six computer rankings, giving the Longhorns a BCS grade of .998 out of 1.000.

Alabama is second across the board, behind Texas in the polls and the computers. The Crimson Tide has a BCS average of .949, which bodes well for Alabama. The Tide will be tough to catch from behind if it can stay unbeaten."

1. Lots of "ifs" in there --
too many! :scared: We've got Oklahoma State at home, Texas Tech in Lubbock, and Kansas all coming up -- two top-ten teams and a top 25-team. OSU and Tech have lots of incentive to beat us, too. And the Aggies would love to salvage their season by upsetting us, as they have done before.

All of this kind of came out of the blue for most Texas fans. I don't recall hearing anyone in Austin -- fans or media -- saying that Texas had a shot at the national championship game before the season began. Last time, there was lots of hype about it, considering we had Vince and all. Colt McCoy is a good quarterback but I don't think most of us thought he was great. Time will tell whether this team is for real. I plan to enjoy it while it lasts. :)

Hook 'em, Horns!

3. Razorback here congratulating the Horns
They were awesome against a very good Missouri team; my Hogs did not give them a challenge (My Hogs Suck.) I believe the Big 12 has surpassed the SEC for now as the best conference in the country.

4. OMG! Really? Are you sure? Big 12 the best?
Now will you please admit that the AL is the better MLB league?

5. El Supremo, please do not let me be the source of your orgasms
The Big 12 is pretty fricking awesome right now. Who can argue? Per your contention that the AL is better then the NL, I'm reminded of a "conversation" with a shipmate in 1974, an incredibly obnoxious Oakland A's fan (is there any other kind?) who blathered on about the superiority of the AL merely because of the existence of the A's. The contention was pretty fucking stupid 30+ years ago. I can not, with rational mind, even suggest that a league with Kansas City and Baltimore is the "better." Please try again.

Per your subject line, the big 12 is the best NOW!! You understand the law of finite??

7. Look at the facts:
Interleague Wins by League
Year AL NL
1997 97 117
1998 114 110
1999 116 135
2000 136 115
2001 132 120
2002 123 129
2003 115 137
2004 126 125
2005 136 116
2006 154 98
2007 137 115
2008 149 102
Totals 1,408 1,336

By my calculations that is 57% to 43% in favor of the AL in the last 4 years. Oh sure, they're just the best "NOW".

11. And I suppose you are going to tell me
that Mike Schmidt is not the greatest home run hitter of all time because of some silly statistics you find somewhere. The AL uses the designated hitter rule like Viagra; so sad. What is the next trick the junior league is going to come up with to "better" their game? "Best" and "greatest" are what make the sport go round. And I do not believe I suggested that the AL is the "best" now. I have no reason to.

There's no stinking winning in such discussions. Why else have them? I like Coke Better then Pepsi. Now roll out those stats.

15. I used to drink RC all the time
as a young lad but I haven't seen RC in a retail outlet in decades. No Bourbon for me, makes me crazy. Just beer for me.

8. Thanks, Bosshog,
from an admitted Longhorn fan (really? ;))

You won't find me making predictions but, of course, I'll have my fingers crossed.

The Arkansas game was the one game I couldn't attend back in 1977 when I was a senior (the year of Earl Campbell.) I couldn't afford to fly and to take the bus, I would have had to leave on something like Wednesday and return the following Tuesday! Even then, I considered it but I couldn't afford staying in a motel that long! :) So I watched the game on television. A perfect season was spoiled by losing in the Cotton Bowl to Notre Dame and Joe Montana. (I didn't remember that it was Joe Montana until I just now looked it up! So Earl got the Heisman instead of Joe Montana! Wow!) Anyway, I've learned to take nothing for granted! :hi:

10. The Earl Campbell game
when Lou Holtz for the first, and last time, trotted out the Hogs in White Jerseys and Red Pants. They were silly looking Hogs.
