Many friends and I discussed it all week.
* Classic home Fury of Anti-Revenge after the bowl game victory over UCLA in last year's Las Vegas Bowl. BYU led virtually all game then UCLA nearly pulled it out at the end, having a chippie FG blocked on the final play. In that type of situation, it's a massive, massive advantage to the home team if it hosts the same team early in the following season. I've posted that angle many times over the years on DU and other sites. The home team is enraged that the visitor expects to gain revenge on the road, and early in the game the home team inevitably delivers a brutal smack down to verify the pecking order. It's by far my favorite home made betting angle. I had BYU in the first half today and I never expected to sweat, and did not.
* BYU was also furious that so much was made of last week's narrow escape at Washington, with the controversial penalty call in the final seconds. It was like the legitimacy of BYU's victory was being questioned by fans nationwide.
Maybe once a year the motivational factors align like that and severely favor a home team. The last one I can remember was a game we discussed in the Sports Forum early last season, when New England hosted San Diego in week two. Similarly, New England had the home Fury of Anti-Revenge angle after the comeback playoff victory over San Diego on the road in the 2006 playoffs, including badmouthing remarks by Tomlinson after the playoff game, plus it was the week after New England was in the national spotlight for the videotape cheating episode against the Jets. New England figured to be in a fury vs. the Chargers and it turned out that way, a first half blowout.
