North Dakota St. loses despite no-hitter
http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/8006634/?MSNHPHCP>1=39002

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Two North Dakota State pitchers combined for a no-hitter on Wednesday, but lost 2-0 to Creighton thanks to walks and a hit batter in a seven-inning game.

Chad Berg walked four of the first six batters of the game, allowing Creighton to score its first run, then hit Joe Servais with a pitch to make the score 2-0.

Berg walked the first batter of the next inning before he was replaced by Chris Paterson.

The Bluejays (21-8) loaded the bases with walks again in the third inning, but Paterson got Nick Nordgren to ground out to end the threat.

North Dakota State (6-16) had seven hits in the first game of a doubleheader.

Creighton coach Ed Servais said he hadn't seen anything like it in his 40 years in the sport.

"Baseball is a strange, strange game," he said.

2. technically Hawkins did not throw a no-hitter --STRANGE
The 4-0 loss was the largest margin of a no-hitter loss in the 20th century, and Hawkins became the first Yankees pitcher to lose a no-hitter. On Sept. 4, 1991 the Committee for Statistical Accuracy, appointed by Commissioner Fay Vincent, changed the definition of a no-hitter to require that a pitcher throw at least nine full innings and a complete game. Since Hawkins played for the visiting team in the game in question, the White Sox never batted in the ninth inning, Hawkins lost the credit for a no-hitter.

It was a no hitter under the rules at the time he threw it and had the creidt removed because of a rule change over a year later. To me, that's just bullshit. Like ruling HR in old Yankee stadium (pre-renov) no good because the fence was closer.

Still I remember that game as it was the start of bizarre no nos by the Yankees in the 90's which included Jim Abbott, Dwight Gooden, David Cone & David Wells (last 2 being perfectos).

5. The visiting team can still throw a no no.
They just can't do so while losing (no last ups for the home team).

I just hate making it retroactive.

7. Matt Young had the same thing happen to him for the Red Sox
in Cleveland not too long after this. I think he lost 3-0, mostly on walks and errors.

6. Talk about bad luck
Some pitchers just seem not to catch any breaks. Reminds me of Pedro Martinez, who often throws games and his team fails to back him up.
