And I don't think NBC made enough of it, a horse being passed like that then coming back again.
It's not like he ran down a stiff, or made a phony comeback into slow fractions. They equaled the stakes record. Street Sense didn't run green like the Blue Grass. He didn't veer in when he made the lead. He may have been a bit lazy but mostly he just got outfinished.
Curlin is definitely more versatile than Street Sense. But I love the way Street Sense is so dependable with the burst off the final turn.
That race probably could have been won with a slightly later move by Borel but no way I'm faulting him. You take a lead like that and the odds of being retaken by the same horse are almost nil.
and disappointing. But that disappointment will be short lived. There was no doubt in my mind Curlin had the best shot to upset Street Sense. And he just kept motoring down the stretch even after being passed, sign of a really courageous runner. (He's really filled out great since I saw him at the Rebel Stakes, where I was impressed with his composure more than anything.) And Street Sense ran lights out too (boy does he love those head bob finishes!) and even did it well off the rail to disprove the silly "only a rail horse" meme ... just goes to show what a monumental achievement the Triple Crown is ... and how it can be so hearbreaking at the same time. And they tied the Preakness Stakes record! I'd like to see both of them at the Belmont - perhaps facing Rags to Riches?
