Who, in the long run, will be the best QB from the class of '06

All three QBs taken in the first round this year have worked their way into the starting position (though Leinart is now hurt). Two of them--Vince Young and Jay Cutler--still have a shot at making the playoffs (though in Young's case it's a pretty slim chance).

I think it's pretty unusual for even first-round picks to make an impact so quickly at the QB position. Even the famed QB Class of '83, when six were taken in the first round, had only two NFL starters by season's end (Marino and Elway--Jim Kelly was starting, too, but in the USFL).

So who, in the long run, will be the best QB in the class of '06?

2. I think it will be Cutler

My opinion is a bit biased, of course, since I'm a Broncos fan, but I think he has the most upside of the three. Young has been great, but Donovan McNabb's experience shows how tough it can be for even the best of the dual-threat QBs to stay healthy, and I don't think Young is nearly as good a passer as McNabb. I think he'll be more Vick than McNabb.

8. Leinert or Cutler, for those reasons

While he's an exciting quarterback now, Young faces a very dangerous course ahead of him. The injuries to McNabb and Vick aren't accidental or because they're particularly weak. While Young shows potential to be a great quarterback for many years, I can't help but think he'll be eclipsed in overall success by a more traditional passer type. Dual Threat QB's have a very short shelf life generally.

4. Vince Young. Because he wants to be coached.

Unlike the fraudulent Mike Vick, Young wants to be coached and taught how to play the position correctly. Once he gets his reads down he's going to be a very dangerous player. Lienart and Cutler are going to be very good, the other two aren't going to make it.

7. I'm With You, Slayer

At what point do people look at the mediocre record of the Falcons and start to decide that maybe at least part of it is Michael Vick's fault? We have annointed this guy over one good game against the Packers and that was 3 years ago. At some point, we need to look at whether this guy has the real QB'ing ability to win in the NFL.

What i see about Young, most importantly, is that he seems to SEE the field. He has that natural skill of seeing the whole field and having the football smarts to know what's likely to happen just before it does. Even arm strength isn't as important as that for an NFL quarterback.

He's coachable, perhaps because he is as much a student of the tactics of football as much as he is an athlete.

I think you're right about Lienart and Cutler too. And boy, does Cutler have a gun, or what?

5. Matt Leinart

I think it will be Matt Leinart. I am not buying the hype about Young. Even with a worse offensive line Leinart put up better numbers than Young. In addition, once the Offensive line began to play better the team began to win. In the case of Young I contend his defense has carried him and the team and he has been given credit for the team winning. Young was barely able to throw for a touchdown pass against two of the worst teams (Texans and Jaguars) in the NFL. In addition, the Titans won their game against the Jaguars even though the team as a whole has only 84 total yards. So the defense won that game, but once again Young was given credit for the win. Furthermore, Young has mainly beaten struggling teams. Moreover, the win against the Giants was mainly due to the Giants being only a shell of themselves, having their second string defense on the field, and guys like Buress giving up on the game. So Matt Leinart will end up being the best of the 06 quarterbacks.
