I think of that magical 1998 season, when he and Sammy Sosa brought so many people back to America's pastime.
I think of how I felt that moment one night in early September where he took Steve Trachsel's first offering just over the left-field wall, hearing Joe Buck scream, "DOWN THE LEFT FIELD LINE! Is it enough? GAAAWWWWWWWWNE!"
I think of him touching home plate, lifting his son in the air in the celebration that anyone who's a father or a son of a loving father can understand.
I think of the reaction I had at work when that 62nd homer happened -- I had cleanup duty and took an especially long time mopping the break room just to have another chance to watch McGwire bat. I remember screaming in joy, and someone walking into the break room out of curiosity, and me stuttering when I tried to describe what just happened, and she looked at the TV and asked, "DID HE DO IT?", and I screamed, "HE DID IT!!!"
I think of all this, and I honestly don't care whether or not he took steroids. What he did to revitalize the game MORE THAN makes up for it.
If I had a vote, he would get mine without an ounce of hesitation.
