The Cubs announced Monday at Wrigley Field that manager Dusty Baker's contract will not be renewed.
Baker, who was 322-326 in his four years with the team, addressed the media briefly at the press conference, even though he had said Sunday that it was the last chance to hear him "before I go underground" for the winter. He did not take any questions after talking for only a few minutes.
"I'd like to thank the Cubs for the opportunity," he said. "Wish we'd been able to get it done, but we didn't. Fully. I expect to stay in baseball in some capacity. Right now I'm going to take a few days and be with my family and see if the phone rings. "
"It's a very sad day," said team general manager Jim Hendry. "Beyond baseball, Dusty is a great man, a class individual who's done a lot for a lot of people on and off the field, including me."
