Redskins fans--- team's looking pretty SHARP huh?

 Good lord!

Oh this season is looking like it is going to be a BALL to watch!!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/26/AR2006082601029.html

FOXBOROUGH, Mass., Aug. 26 -- There may have been some spin behind Coach Joe Gibbs's apoplectic postgame state after last weekend's loss to the New York Jets, a savvy coach trying to shock his team into shape with heavy expectations mounting. On Saturday night, following a 41-0 thrashing at Gillette Stadium during which his starters were thoroughly dominated, the Hall of Fame coach adopted a very different tone.

The first-team offense, missing running back Clinton Portis, has yet to mount a scoring drive, the starting offensive line yielded sacks on each of the final three drives of the first half, receivers dropped balls and veteran starting quarterback Mark Brunell was a miserable 7 for 16 for 51 yards (a lowly 48.05 rating this preseason).

During the roughly 38 minutes the starters for both teams were on the field, the results were staggering. The Patriots had 20 first downs; Washington 4. The Patriots amassed 296 yards; the Redskins 65. The Patriots passed for 231 yards; Washington 20. The Patriots had 27 points; the Redskins none. The Patriots never punted with their starting offense on the field, and Brady was not sacked.

Does the NFL have a "mercy rule" this year?

1. I don't remember Gibbs' teams ever winning a pre-season game.
I really don't.

The 'Skins played poorly last night, but they know they're pre-season exhibition games and no more.

2. The Skins are in trouble
Brunell is the worst QB in the division and not by a little bit. This is a very overrated team.

3. Brunnel is lousy, but I like Gibbs' track record of working with QBs...
But, again, they're deliberately not showing all their stuff in pre-season, which makes me wonder why they have Brunnel out there at all.

That makes no sense to me.

But it was no unusual for the 'Skins to lose all their pre-season games under Gibbs.

4. its not that they are losing
its that their starters look like complete crap. Brunell had two horrible years before last year. He's likely done and if that's the case, they win 7 games at most.

5. You wish!
The defense will win them a good number of games.

The offense will take time to sort itself out.

6. the offense is going to suck all year
they just don't have much talent, especially with the lingering injury to Portis. Brunell was awful the previous two years. The Skins are heading for last place in the east. You have to be able to score in the NFC East. If you can't, it won't matter how good the defense is.

11. the defense is vulnerable to big plays, I think
the LB corps isn't what it was, and the secondary, while vicious, is a big play secondary, meaning they give up big plays as well as make them. Archuleta can't cover, he can only hit (and he hits very well) you want to see Archuleta covering TO in Big D? that should be fun. the team is built to stop the run, only problem is that this isn't your father's NFC east, there are big fast receivers all over the board.

and as for everyone saying that pre-season doesn't count...you don't think Bill Belichek (hey, wait, doesn't he have as many rings as St. Joe, just from the past five years?) doesn't know that the preseason doesn't count? remember last year, it took the offense two games to score, warmups matter.

And let's not forget the brilliance of the kicking game.

7. I can't believe they are going with Brunell again
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 12:22 AM by Awsi Dooger
His arm is shot and only going to get worse. Like DaveinMD indicated he had horrid years in '03 and '04, less than 6 yards per pass attempt. Last year he got that up to 6.7 but it was flukish with miraculous big plays by Santana Moss. You can't count on that again.

Frankly, it was probably to the detriment of the team and Gibbs' second regime. If Brunell had flopped bigtime, Gibbs might have realized a bold move was necessary, like my Dolphins did by nabbing Culpepper.

Gibbs should know better but perhaps he's still under the delusion he can win a Super Bowl with anyone at QB. But those guys had downfield arms as did Jay Schroeder. Last year all four QBs in the league championship games had a minimum of 7.3 yards per attempt and no way Brunell threatens anything in that range.

8. LAmpley says they will win it all this year
:bounce:

No actually all the Skins fans around her( where is a dead cat when you need one?) were telling me that it was ALL OVER the day Gibbs signed back on. I wish I had saved the company wide emails that went out that day declaring that the NFC East was permenantl OVER and that the glory days have once again returned to old D... okay MAryland but lets not mention that mmmmkay?

It isn't so easy to win with a team that is 1 deep at every position as opposed to keeping vets around for a play here or there (like the Patriots do). Gibbs old strategy doesn't hold up any more.

You are right about Moss. That was the best pickup they have made in years. He won them the Dallas game all by himself last year.

I just happened to catch some of the game this weekend and they look like a package of s**tstained used bubblegum.

13. Me and my Lampleys
I really like the guy. What other broadcast veteran gets genuinely enthusiastic about hosting the obscure midday stint at the Winter Olympics, with the cross country skiiing and biathlon?

I haven't seen the Skins yet but you got me sampling the stats and they are remarkably inept, almost unheard of for preseason. But could be worse, if they had a foundation of Gators and not Canes.

14. My boss is an "old time" Redskins fan
HE dones't like the Miami Hurricanes ;-) I'll do that again in case you missed it ;-)

I told him "Look I don't like them (not for the same reason he doesn't like them ;-) ) but they are players. You get maximum effort out of all those guys they instill it in each other and hold each other up to that high standard" He reluctantly agreed.

17. My boss hates the Canes and USC
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 01:51 AM by Awsi Dooger
They are his two most despised teams. So where do you think I stand with him?

He offhand mentioned it a few years ago, days after taking over. My co-workers looked at me for a second, then burst into laughter. I told him flat out those schools were one and two with me. He turned his head to the right and said, "are you serious? Oh my god." Like it wasn't possible. And not a threat of a smile.

No raises lately.

Not as many Canes coming along to hold up that standard. Coker's recruiting sucks. The rumor is Butch Davis may turn the tables and replace Coker if this season is similar to the last couple, 3 or 4 losses. But the schedule is favorable, especially if they get past FSU on Monday.

10. The Patriots second-string QB is better than Brunell
Or any of the Skins QBs. Brunell has a rag arm and can't throw a decent pass over 30 yds. Maybe he could use Tommy John surgery on that arm. Off topic: Brady was absolutely awesome. Is there anyone better than him in the NFL?
