(World Cup) Holy F**cking Shit!
Germany v. Poland! Anyone who thinks soccer is boring is probably brain-dead enough to leave the match after 90 minutes. Mistake. Biiig mistake.

:wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow:

2. Yes, finally an exciting game!

I have no friggin' clue what was going on but it was fun to watch. I felt sorry for Poland, though -- they really took it to Germany even with ten men.

I've been watching the WC every day and was starting to think that soccer is a game where a bunch of guys run around kicking a ball for 90 minutes and nobody scores.

5. Sadly, so do a lot of fans. One German T-shirt:
"Last time it took 90 days - this time it will take 90 minutes"

6. Oh my god. Well, I would never have rooted for Germany to begin with
but that's really cold. They should NOT have let that shirt into the stadium.

7. well the entire English section
when playing Germany has been known to chant "Two World Wars and One World Cup" so it's kind of a tradition. Hell, it's Europe, within the past 200 years, everyone has been allies with, and at war with, everyone else, there's bad blood everywhere.

9. English fans enjoy whistling "The Great Escape" at the Germans...
Often with the words "You're Schmidt and you know it". Against the French anything mentioning Napoleon or the Battle of Trafalgar is preferable. There's something about football that brings out the fascist in everyone.

"Hell, it's Europe, within the past 200 years, everyone has been allies with, and at war with, everyone else, there's bad blood everywhere."
Limiting it to 200 years? Some French fans still chant about the Battle of Hastings, which was 940 years ago. When Scotland play England, there are still songs about the Battle of Stirling bridge over 700 years ago. In fact when England played Denmark in Euro 2004, some English papers brought up the topic of the fight against the Vikings, which was well over 1000 years ago.

10. Talk about long memories
If the United States ever plays England in the World Cup, we ought to taunt the Brits with some Revolutionary War and War of 1812 zingers.

1. We kicked your asses out and you couldn't get us back!

11. Pah! Anyway, you need to think one up for Italy!
"If the United States ever plays England in the World Cup, we ought to taunt the Brits with some Revolutionary War and War of 1812 zingers."
The Revolution was a very unfair war. You had Spain, France and the Netherlands on your side. And you didn't win the war of 1812! The US was the aggressor in that war and you wholly failed to conquer Canada.
So there.
"1. We kicked your asses out and you couldn't get us back!"
Isn't that already the basic theme of your national anthem?
Anyway, the pressing issue for America is to think of a song about beating the Italians. "You Didn't Really Invent the Lasagna" or "Mussolini was Short and Fat" sound pretty good.

13. Well, if you actually have some history...
...then people will remember these things. We British are actually quite lucky that we have an impressive military history and have not been successfully invaded by an opposing army since 1066.

I suppose where I live we could afford to taunt America's new sporting mates the Italians with chants about Boudecia pillaging Colchester back in the days of the Roman empire but there you go!

12. I wonder
Was King Harold's last thought as he died on the field of Hastings: "Damn it now the French can taunt us about this 940 years from now"?

Actually, if this kind of thing was around before WWI, maybe it wouldn't've happened (Gravrilo Princep might've been in a stadium watching his Serbian side and singing about Serbian nationalism instead of shooting at the Archduke).

It gets worse in club football IMO. However, it's a part of the world, and so it's a part of football (and unless it's Lazio or Zaragoza or those fascist jerks, I appreciate it to a certain degree as long as its relatively decent at the end of the day).
