NFL: Ref botched the call
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 05:13 PM by timber84
No shit sherlock. Here's the article:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/football/2020AP_FBN_Steelers_Colts_Wrong_Call.html

The NFL said the referee made a mistake: Troy Polamalu caught the ball. The league acknowledged Monday that referee Pete Morelli erred when he overturned on replay Polamalu's interception of a Peyton Manning pass Sunday in the playoff game between Pittsburgh and Indianapolis.

1. I'd be more pissed only if Indy won
The officiating has been horrible all through the post season.

2. The Bear's "fumble/touchdown" was another horrible call...
I'd understand if it was close, but it was fumbled at least two yards' shy of the goalline. I came out of my chair at that one. Thankfully they overturned it, but the Bears scored anyway on the next play. I can't stand shitty officiating, but still, it's no job I'd want.

8. Also, from that game,
their was the play where Grossman was intercepted with about 3 minutes left in the game. That play shouldn't even counted. The play clock had run down to zero, yet none of the officials saw the clock run down to zero.

14. Clock trouble when Carolina played at Chicago the first time!
Carolina had the ball with their backs against their own end zone. Delhomme started to go under center, stopped, then turned toward the official and gestured to the far-end play clock. He wasn't getting any response, so he started to walk towards him, still pointing at the clock.

Well, ding, apprently the clock that Delhomme couldn't see ran out, so they called delay of game. Jake was beside himself, and the ref wasn't hearing any of it. The clock that Delhomme could see hadn't been started, but apparently the clock the ref could see had started. Bizarre. The announcers didn't quite know what to make of it. The cameraman turned to it, it was stopped on 20. You'd think they'd be synced, but guess something went haywire.

3. at least they admitted what was obvious to everyone
Yeesh, that was one of the worst calls I've ever seen. And the thing is, they got it correct on the field, and then OVERTURNED it! :wtf:

(side note: I don't know how I missed seeing this thread before posting my dupe some thirty minutes later :eyes:)

5. Not only that...
But wtf was with the refs not calling offsides on the Colts? I'm sorry but I think Porter was right - everyone wanted to see Indy win (except for a few of us, lol).

7. I agree with you there,
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 08:17 PM by SethInUpstateNY
but don't forget the pass to Randle-El in 2nd quarter that wasn't called for defensive pass interference. The officiating the whole weekend stunk, as a whole.

13. The refs were horrible all weekend....
...that was one of the worst playoff weekends I've seen from refs. Amazing that these crews made it to the playoffs. It that the best the NFL can put out? It only gives credence to the argument for real professional refs.

6. Sooo, do ya think the NFL would have admitted the error is the Colts
had won?

When I heard that addmission on TV, I was screaming "Well NO SH*T! What would you do now ID the Colts had WON??????

I don't understand. Aren't there supposed to be a group make the final decision on a play review?

9. Shenanigans...confirmed.
They change rules to help Manning win, now they change calls.

The poor NFL still can't give Manning a SB no matter how much they try...when was the last time you ever heard of the Colts getting called for offensive holding? yeah - like never...

...next years changes:

Rule 1: Colts get to start every drive at mid-field.
Rule 2: If Indy gets 14 points behind, the score automatically reverts back to 0-0.

10. Still won't be enough.
The Colts will ALWAYS find a way to lose in the playoffs.

11. He can't win the big one
...Manning can't win the big game. He couldn't beat Florida in College and he really hasn't won a significant game in the pros also.

12. Remember the Browns-Oilers botched call in the early 80s.
It cost the Browns their chance to compete in their conference championship. The whole world saw it - there was even a cartoon about it in the NYDaily News.

The Browns were totally hosed. I'm glad that this didn't ruin Pittsburgh's chance at winning.

15. That "football type move" is a stupid rule
as is the having to hold onto the ball if you hit the ground IF that is part of the catching process (NOT if you catch it then fall down and drop the ball)

He clearly caught the ball. The officials came this close to completely changing the game result.

16. As much as I hate the Steelers...
... that was among the most outlandishly stupid calls I've ever seen. No question it was an interception. I didn't see a rerun of the "almost" safety by the Steelers, either, but there certainly were a lot of questionable calls in that game and the officiating seemed blatantly tilted in favor of the Colts. Hell, I was rooting for the Colts but I want games that are decided fair and square, not by fuckups from officials!

I swear, between the college bowl games and these playoffs, I don't recall ever seeing such a display of poor officiating. At least the NFL came out with a statement; now the NCAA should apologize for the embarrassing display of officiating during the bowl games.

17. The almost safety was a good call
I wanted Pittsburgh to win but apparently, if momentum upon contact drives the QB into the end zone and his feet were outside the goal line when he was hit then it's not a safety.

Replay showed that Manning was on the 1 yard line when the defense got to him.

18. Thanks -- I didn't see the replay
There were so many questionable calls in that game I lost track!
