Sox send Renteria to Braves for Marte
DALLAS -- The re-shaping of the Red Sox continued on Thursday with a major move, as the club shipped shortstop Edgar Renteria and cash considerations to the Braves for highly-touted third-base prospect Andy Marte.

Less than a year after signing Renteria to a four-year, $40 million pact, the Red Sox decided to part ways with the three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner.

Renteria, except for brief spurts, never seemed to be in a groove during his only season with the Red Sox. He hit .276 with 100 runs, eight homers and 70 RBIs while committing a career-high 30 errors.

The move puts a huge question mark on who will play shortstop for the Red Sox in 2005.

Are the Sox trying to cut salaries? They may be keeping Manny.

Who's going to be left???

1. Youkilis might be playing shortstop.
I still don't know why Millar is with the team and we're getting rid of people like Renteria who have actual potential.

3. Great deal for the Sox.
Marte is set to be one of the best players in the majors - Renteria, on the other hand, is an average SS with an overblown reputation. Now, all Boston needs to do is find another SS, and they're set.

4. I definetly agree. Renteria has been declining for a couple of seasons
now and Marte seems to be a tremendous talent. I believe he was rated the #1 prospect in all of baseball. The Sox have some great young talent now at the minors and in the majors. Beckett and Papelbon are both only 25. They had a pretty old team last year.

5. it's the opposite of the Steinbrenner model
which suits the Red Sox, apparently. Instead of trading your prospects for fading stars, trade your fading stars for prospects.

6. actually
the yankees are stepping away from that model too. Cashman has said that Cano and Wang are untouchable. They traded Womack today for prospects. A dead body would have been equal value for Womack.

7. I'm not sold on Cano, to be honest.
What do you think his potential is?

8. I love Cano
I think he shows excellent range at second. When he learns to keep his focus, he'll be a very good glove man. He turns a great double play.

Offensively, he will be one of the most productive offensive second baseman in baseball. He's only 22, so as his power develops a lot of those doubles will turn into home runs. His walk rate will improve a little and he'll be a guy who will give you an 850 ops from second base. That is very hard to find.

10. From what I saw Cano seemed to have promise but Wang
had a 3.64 K/9 which is one of the worst in the majors. That doesn't bode well for long term success.

11. he's a ground out machine
he throws a 94 mph sinker. The Yanks old pitching coach taught avoiding strikeouts. His K rates in the minors were much better. I think he'll be quite good.

9. Bill Mueller signed with the Dodgers
I knew he wasn't coming back but it still saddens me to see him go. He hit the most important single in Red Sox history.

14. Sorry. I clicked on this thread because you wrote "Sox"
I assumed you were referring to the World Champion Chicago White Sox.

16. Did they trade Renteria. too?

I just c&p'd the headline. I thought about adding "Red" but figured people who knew the teams would know which one it referred to.

So sorry for the confusion. :) And enjoy the championship. I was glad the CHISox won it.
