Poll question: Who Needs to Win a Title More?
Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 08:18 PM by erpowers
I contend Alex Rodriquez needs to win a title more than Payton Manning. Rodriquez is paid $25 million a year. Also, many people say not only is Rodriquez the best short stop in the game, but the best player in the game. However, none of the teams he has played on have won a championship with him on the team. Furthermore, it seems that when he joins a team they begin to lose and when he leaves a team they begin to win. It could be said that when he came to the Yankees they already had not won a championship in a few years. However, it seemed that after Texas let him go they had a better Season.

Peyton Manning on the other hand has been able to lead his team to the playoffs. In addition, one could argue that in the last few years he has shown some progress. After not winning a playoff game for years he lead his team to the AFC Championship.

1. Went with Peyton mainly because I figure the media will harp on him
more than Alex if he never wins the big one...that will be the way they'll always describe him after he retires. Can't see them ALWAYS doing that with Alex.

In any case, if neither ever wins the big one, I will be very, very happy!

2. Manning
There is no position in baseball that has as much effect on the outcome of a game as a Quarterback does in football.

The closest thing would be a starting pitcher, and even then, they only start every 4 or 5 days.

The Colts offense goes through Peyton Manning. Not the case with Rodriguez.

3. Neither...
...I'm not in any way a beleiver in the notion that a championship is needed to validate indiviual accomplishment.

4. Well that depends
Both Peyton and A-Rod have teams with the ability to win a championship. I think in their case (and other athletes in their situation) this debate will come up.
In their case, I feel they need to win one in order to really validate them as one of the greatest in their sports.

5. hmm, good question
A-Rod. plays worse in the playoffs than in the regular season.
Peyton: can't win outdoors in January.

I say Peyton, actually. A-Rod can redeem himself by playing heroically in the playoffs for the rest of his career. Many great baseball players never won titles and are still legends. People understand that you can hit .500 with a .750 slugging percentage, but if your team isn't any good, you're on your own. But a quarterback is defined by titles. Teams are built around them, they control everything on the offense, especially with the elder Manning brother. if he plays heorically, they win. So the onus is on him to win and validate his presence in football history.

9. right in line
with his normal numbers. As for Mr. October, check out his ALCS numbers. His team carried him through some putrid October numbers.

6. a QB in the nfl
has a much greater impact on his team than an infielder on a baseball team. Peyton will win it this year. Eli next year.

10. Peyton....it goes back to his UT days, too.
He had great stats and regular season records at Tennessee, but could never win the big bowl games. A year after he left, Tennessee won the National Championship.

Now it's getting to be like they used to do with Dan Marino. If he doesn't win one, they'll always bring that up whenever mentioning him. Especially this year....if the Colts don't win it this year, many people will say they have choked (I don't agree with that assessment, but that's what they'll say).
