Question About Playoff eligibility
Here's the argument.

If the red sox bring hansen up from the minors and he pitches lights out, and foulk continues to suck, can the sox put foulk on the 60-day disabled list and replace him on the playoff roster with hansen?

I believe they can under baseball rules. My friend believes differently.

anyone know for sure?

1. I'm unfamiliar with the players in question but...
That's certainly within the rules.

4. Yeah, they can do it.

Playoff rosters are set before every SERIES. As long as he's on the eligible roster, which pretty much contains anyone you'd even possibly consider to play in the playoffs, he can definitely be activated. Not sure exactly how many go on the playoff eligible roster. I think it's around 40.

On edit: Here's the rule:

Playoff Rosters: Playoff rosters must be set at 25, not including disabled players, on August 31. For each player on the 60-day DL, teams may add players to the eligible list during the playoffs at the same position, provided that they were in the orginization on August 31. This is why some teams will bring up injured minor-league players and put them on the 60-day DL. Teams must choose 25 players from their playoff eligible list before each round of the playoffs.

5. Exactly. As for Foulk...
He can be moved to the DL for a freakin' hangnail if they want to.

10. Playoff roster rule and the '87 Tigers
Edited on Mon Sep-19-05 09:34 PM by akarnitz
Tigers traded w/the Angels on 8/31/87 and got Fred Lynn, but he reported after midnight on 9/1, thus was not eligible for the playoffs. The Tigers certainly could have used his bat against the Twins in October!

Oh, well, that's still the best time I ever had watching the Tigs(including '84), and it's the best finish to a regular season(the battle for the A.L. East crown against Toronto) I've ever seen.

On edit: Thanks, Vash, for hunting down the rule. I always have the hardest time looking for those types of things.

6. No....they had to be on the roster on September 1st to be eligible..
for the playoff roster unless they are replacing a truly injured player. Any move to the DL would be closely scrutinized by the Commissioner's office.

7. No, they have to be in the organization before Sept. 1
And the "close scrutiny" never actually happens.
