Hockey phenom Sidney Crosby to appear on Leno on Thursday night
posted August 2 @ 11:05, EST

TORONTO (CP) - Sidney Crosby is headed to Hollywood.

The teenage hockey phenom is scheduled to appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday. Crosby, who turns 18 this Sunday, joins actor Rob Schneider (Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo) and musician Michael Penn on the NBC talk show.

The Pittsburgh Penguins made Crosby the first overall pick in Saturday's NHL draft in Ottawa.

Crosby, from Cole Harbour, N.S., will tape the show Thursday afternoon.

While he is in Los Angeles, Crosby is also scheduled to be interviewed by the magazine Vanity Fair. He will also be appearing in a Reader's Digest article expected to be published in October.

could warrant this much publicity, after his new league just trashed a whole season

3. Doesn't NBC (Leno's network) have the TV contract for the NHL?
If so, that'd explain Crosby's appearance.

4. Unless something just happened I don't think there is a US tv contract.
I could be wrong, of course.

5. Not even for the playoffs?
I thought the deal in the pre-lockout season was that ESPN had the regular season contract and NBC covered the playoffs (or at least the cup finals). While ESPN has jumped ship, I haven't heard anything about NBC.

7. Ahhh, you might have something there
I was just thinking of ESPN not renewing. Didn't consider the playoffs.

Sorry.

6. I believe you are correct...
NBC and the NHL signed some sort of revenue-sharing deal for their broadcasts. ESPN, which was actually paying for broadcast rights, got pretty pissed off, and declined to renew their contract on their existing terms.

2. I was in Nova Scotia when the "lottery" took place
It was interesting to watch. This kid is great. If Gretzy has such high praise for him I'm really looking forward to watching him play on Sept 21 when the Bruins meet the Penquins.
