A Texas sized choke job...and Tony Romo wasn't even on the team!
Edited on Sat Oct-29-11 08:29 AM by Upton

The Texas Rangers played like a championship team throughout the entire 2011 season and into the playoffs until the 9th inning in Game 6 of the World Series. Then one strike away from winning its first championship, Texas choked. Much of the blame can be directed at Rangers manager Ron Washington, who made multiple questionable decisions duirng Games 6 and 7 of the Fall Classic.

However, the Rangers did not play like a team determined to win a title in those final few innings. Even the most consistent Texas players made critical errors that eventually doomed their team.

It was unlike Texas to miss routine defensive plays so close to winning Game 6. In both the 9th and 10th innings, Texas was one strike away from a world championship but was unable to finish. Fly balls that should have been caught were missed while routine ground balls were bobbled. To put it politely, Texas choked. Washington was just as much a part of that as his players.

The Rangers’ collapse while being one strike away from a world title twice is perhaps the biggest blunder in Dallas-Fort Worth professional sports history.

Texas choked..there's no other way to describe it. Only once before has a team come within one out of winning the WS and failed to do so...the '86 Red Sox and Buckner.

Considering the Rangers were actually within one strike on two different occasions, this can accurately be described as the biggest choke in World Series history.

51 years and counting...Congratulations Texas!

1. The Red Sox were also within one strike twice in 86.
Although I concur that this was a bigger collapse. For one thing, the Sox didn't have three blown saves in that game.

8. Two blown saves
Scoring two to tie it in the 9th is one blown save. Scoring two more to tie it in the 10th is another. Next inning, it remained tied until the home run. When tied, it's not save situation, as Texas would have to be up by at least one run.

6. Nice to rub it in...
I have no opinion of most Rangers players, too bad they had to have George Draft Dodger Bush associated with them...they might have had people cheering for them then.

7. Actually, it's a mere 40 years
they were the Washington Senators II: Electric Boogaloo for the first 11. I remember listening to Frank Howard and the Senators on WTOP from Baltimore County, on nights when the Orioles weren't on.
