Mitch McConnell lobbied to get Louisville into Big 12 instead of West Virginia?
Edited on Wed Oct-26-11 07:33 PM by El Supremo
Sources: West Virginia fighting Louisville for Big 12 spot; politics entering arena

Nothing is certain in realignment until the ink is dry, and that includes the Big 12's replacement for Missouri.

The only thing missing in the drama was politics - and that just became part of the storyline in a big way.

A day ago, West Virginia was the preferred choice by the Big 12 to replace Missouri, multiple sources confirmed. Now the Mountaineers are in a dogfight with Louisville, which has made an 11th hour push to join the conference.

Two Big 12 school sources confirmed that Louisville is back in the mix. And the sources confirmed a New York Times report this morning that Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) had lobbied Oklahoma president David Boren, a former Senate colleague. McConnell grew up in the Louisville area and has an undergraduate degree from Louisville.
The abrupt turn of events raised the ire of West Virginia's two Democratic senators....

2. You oughta like David Boren...
He was one of the most Conservative Democrats ever in the Senate.

From Wiki: Boren was one of only two Democratic senators to vote in favor of the controversial nomination of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court, in 1987.

Oh, and one distant cousin was the Chancellor. And my dad went to UTEP. I don't think I mentioned that my mother graduated from Pitt. Did any of your relatives even finish high school?

4. You know, Condem. You spent the last two years yammering on about how
great realignment of the conferences would be, and now we have a fucking disaster. I was willing to deal with Penn State, but going to 12 and now all this shit about going to 14 or 16?

:wtf:

5. What in the fuck are you talking about?!?
Once the Big Ten added PSU in '93 we had to add one more. Big Jim is holding steady. If forced, we add two more. Texas and Notre Dame. Despite lazarus' feeble protests, academics has a ton to do with Big Ten expansion.

6. If it's about academics, then Texas will not be in the Big 10, and Notre Dame is joining the
Mid-American Conference (at least in football).

19. Agree on all points, Tru.
Got in a brawl at WVU in '81. Then got shot (pellet gun) doing a century ride near Winchester. Beautiful, but I hate the place.

20. Years ago the Canes played them at their stadium...
Edited on Fri Oct-28-11 03:53 PM by trumad
And won on the last play. As they were leaving the stadium, their fans started throwing garbage cans at the Hurricane players severely hurting one of the Cane coaches.

Hated them ever since.
