Golden Gloves

My younger son D has decided to compete in the heavyweight division in the Golden Gloves. We are starting training camp early – competition won't begin until late January. This gives us time to get him in top shape for tournament competition, which is by nature very different from being on a single fight card.

He has a full-time job, and works out in our “gym” in the garage about four times per week. We have a variety of heavy- and speed bags, mitts, etc. We are also surrounded by old dirt and logging roads, perfect for road work. And in the September storms brought down over 25 good-sized trees on my property, and so I'll be getting out my axes for him.

Sparring is not always easily accessible in our area. There are two gyms that are between 30 and 45 minutes away. There are also a few “local” guys who should be willing to put in a few rounds per week with my boy. But we will almost certainly have to do some traveling, to get to some better gyms for higher quality sparring.

I might also put him on a fight card or two between Thanksgiving and New Year's to get some laps around the track.

If this goes as planned, we are hoping to go to the nationals next year.

6. In the mid-afternoon,
my daughters have a high school soccer game. After that, I'll have D in the gym, for "Day 1" of the training program. He's been doing 50+ rounds per week on the bags already. He loves the Teddy Atlas CD program & "numbered" heavy bag. It's based on Cus D'Amato's favorite combinations.

I'll be posting updates here, as things move along. Thanks for your interest!

he looks in pretty good fighting shape now. If he's got your smarts and tactical understanding of the game, he could be pretty damn formidable! :toast: and best of luck!

7. He is in
good enough physical condition now that I'm confident he could do well in a three-round fight already. Tournaments can be hell, though .... you never know how many fights you'll have in a short time.

I'm going to be developing a program to prepare for fighting five different physical types/styles .... tall, thin boxers; short, muscular sluggers; etc. That's why I'll need to secure a variety of sparring optiions. It may include traveling to Micky Ward's gym a few times, where we have an open invitation; possibly visiting some NYC friends.

D has absolutely loved the sport since he was a little guy .... by the age of four, he had picked Carmen Basilio as his favorite fighter. BY no coincidence, that relates to the single area that we need to focus the most on -- when he gets hit, D tends to "forget" defense, and just wants to go on the attack. The fans at ringside love that, but it runs the risk of losing a round .... and in a three-round fight, that ain't good. I favor winning every round of every fight; D likes to knock opponents out.

I'll be calling an old friend, a retired professional who fought on many of the same cards as my brother and I, who wants to work with us. I have great respect for him, and he has asked me to work with his stable of fighters in his gym. He also loves D, and notes that it is rare to have a guy who hits that hard (D is a more powerful puncher than anyone either of us has dealt with). The three of us should balance well.
