SAN FRANCISCO — With Barry Bonds’s perjury trial less than three weeks away, lawyers on both sides will argue their final pretrial motions in federal court Tuesday.
But no matter how much drama unfolds between the lawyers and United States District Court Judge Susan Illston, all eyes will still be on the two men who have been at the crux of this matter — Bonds and Greg Anderson, his former trainer. Both are expected to appear in front of the judge.
Bonds, the major league career home run king, is scheduled to be arraigned and to plead not guilty for the third time since his initial indictment in 2007. Anderson, who spent more than a year in jail for refusing to testify in the case, is scheduled to tell Illston whether he will testify against Bonds, his childhood friend.
Mark Geragos, Anderson’s lawyer, said in a telephone interview last week that Anderson had not changed his mind and would continue to defy the court. Though Illston has said she will jail Anderson for the duration of the trial if he refuses to testify, Geragos said he was not sure that would happen. The trial is set to begin March 21.
