Giants buy out Edgar Renteria

SAN FRANCISCO -- The champion San Francisco Giants declined to exercise their $9.5 million option on World Series MVP Edgar Renteria on Thursday, instead paying him a $500,000 buyout.

It's no surprise because the 34-year-old Renteria is considering retirement after an injury-plagued season. Still, the Giants had to make the decision only three days after Renteria's tiebreaking three-run homer off Cliff Lee in the seventh inning Monday night helped San Francisco win the franchise's first title since moving West in 1958.

"He was obviously a big reason we won, not just the last game but the whole playoff run," said Bobby Evans, the Giants' vice president of baseball operations. "Edgar played a huge role, whether in the clubhouse, on the field or his leadership and his professionalism and his ability to string together some very good games and big hits for us."

The shortstop said Wednesday he will rest for a while before determining his future.

Well at least they gave him three days after he won the World Series for them before they cut his ass. :eyes:

Give him a week to savor the moment, geez.

1. The Giants were contractually obligated to make a decision

within three days after the World Series. Let's not play this as a harsh or rash decision -- Renteria, his agent, and the Giants all knew what had to happen.

2. That's what i was wondering...they said the Giants "had" to make the decision...
which also sort of read that they had to, like you yeah, you HAD to go ahead and do it.

4. This is getting to be a tradition

the Yankees cut Hideki Matsui loose after he won the World Series for them last year, although not nearly as quickly.

6. Matsui
was a free agent. He was not cut loose. There was no option that needed to be picked or declined as with Renteria.

7. These are the Yankees we're talking about
if they'd really wanted him back, they'd have gotten him back.

8. that wasn't the point
I was addressing the cutting of ties. He wasn't back because they wanted to get younger. That's why they added Granderson. This year, they'll be bringing up Montero to replace Posada.

9. The right move for the Giants
I'm glad to see they're not getting too sentimental with playoff heroes. Renteria is NOT a 9.5 million dollar player. Maybe they'll resign him for less, but that money can be better spent elsewhere. I'm not 100% sure, but that shitty 9.5 million dollar option may be on the lousy contract the Red Sox gave him (I was against that at the time).
