So the NFL suspends an alleged drug user indefinitely...
Edited on Sun Jul-18-10 06:37 AM by Bluzmann57
And a sexual predator only gets six games?
Background for those who may not know. The Green Bay Packers Johnny Jolly got areested a couple of years ago on drug charges and is finally going to stand trial on said charges. Ben Roethlisberger, QB of the Pittsburgh Steelers forced himself on at least two women. No Roethlisberger was never convicted of any crimes, but as of now, neither has Jolly. And yet Jolly gets an indefinite suspension because he's a (alleged) drug user and Roethlisberger gets six games. Something doesn't seem right here.
In the interest of fairness, I will admit that I am a huge Packers fan and losing Jolly will not help this team. But I do think that the NFL should review their disclinpary policy.
I almost forgot about Donte Stallworth. He killed a man and he's still playing. Never saw any jail time, but was still convicted. Double standard by the NFL.

1. I think the word "arrested" is the key here...
Ben wasn't arrested.

Here's why Jolly was arrested:

<snip>
Jolly is facing drug charges in Houston after his July 2008 arrest outside a club for possession of at least 200 grams of codeine. If convicted, Jolly faces up to 20 years in prison.

<snip>
Jolly was arrested after 1 a.m. on July 8, 2008, in the parking lot of a Houston club known for drug and gun use.

A police gang unit pulled his car over because of excessive noise coming from amplified bass music. Jolly was arrested on a charge of possession of a controlled substance after police "smelled the strong odor of codeine" in cups in the vehicle, according to the police report. Lab tests subsequently confirmed the codeine.

2. Yes Jolly was arrested
But why wasn't he suspended after his arrest? I think that Goodell had better explain his policy if for nothing else, to clear the air so there isn't even a hint of discrimination or favoritism.
There are also reports that Jolly failed at least two random drug tests and if so, he probably earned his suspension. But again, I think Goddell better explain that.

3. True
but he was re-indicted Dec. 2009 so maybe that's what keyed it.

Again---Ben was not arrested which I think is key here. I think if he was arrested, it would be a different story.

He got pulled over for suspicion of hip-hop?? :wtf:

Codeine cough syrup is the same thing JaMarcus Russell went down for. What's this about??

4. Interesting huh?
I don't think there's any real discrimination going on here though. After all, Jolly did violate the NFL's substance abuse policy. Though admittedly, in all the major sports leagues, often there seems to be two sets of rules... one for the so called telegenic "stars"
and one for everybody else.

5. I sure would like to hear an explanation from the league office on this
I'm not opposed to big suspensions, but this is out of line compared to other NFL suspensions. Jolly has never been in any trouble before, so there's something the league is not telling us.

Though he's awaiting trial to begin at the end of July, he hasn't been convicted of anything yet and he's never been in trouble otherwise. As Lori Nickel at the Journal Sentinel reported, there are three stages to the NFL's substance abuse program and a year long suspension doesn't happen until after there are multiple violations, so there's a lot we don't know. While this suspension only covers the entire season, a Stage 3 violation would trigger a one calendar year suspension, so this isn't a Stage 3 violation. Greg Bedard and Aaron Nagler think this is a combined suspension for substance abuse and a personal conduct violation. Jolly will now spend the season on the reserve-suspended list and the Packers won't have to pay him.

Is this the start of a new, get-really-tough attitude from the NFL?

6. Recently..
I saw a segment on ESPN about codeine cough syrup use among athletes, the way it was mixed in a soft drink and so on, much of it focused on Jolly. Needless to say, despite the fact that he hasn't been convicted, it was less than complimentary.

This might be a bit of a reach, but I wonder if that had something to do with the NFL coming down on him so hard?

8. Well Jolly was indeed a dumb shit for doing this
and I have no problem with him getting a big suspension. But the league said he was being suspended for substance abuse, and this penalty doesn't jive with a first or second offense. The Packer brass have not complained, and their statement essentially said "It was nice knowing you," so they know what's going on. I just think we fans deserve some explanation too.

15. I wish more states had Minnesota's drug testing laws
The issue with StarCaps is it has a banned ingredient but it doesn't list it on it's label. Also the NFL broke state law in regards to the mandatory notification issue in state law. Point is the NFL broke state law and they had to abide by it.
