INDIANAPOLIS — The University of Colorado has been penalized for poor performance in the classroom, losing five scholarships in football and another in men's basketball after falling short of goals when the NCAA released its Academic Progress Report (APR) on Wednesday.
CU officials, however, said they anticipated that the penalty was coming and the loss of scholarships was already absorbed in previous recruiting classes.
Colorado signed five fewer recruits in football last season, as well as one fewer in basketball. Former basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik opted last year to take the scholarship hit and was thus awarded only 12 scholarships for the 2009-10 season.
Colorado was the only school from the six power conferences to be punished in both sports. The Buffaloes scored 920 in football and 897 in basketball, missing the cut line of 925 in a report that measures the classroom performance of every Division I team over a four-year period....
