Selig will issue statement on blown call today
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig is involved in high-level discussions regarding Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga's near-perfect game and whether anything can and should be done to reverse umpire Jim Joyce's blown call that deprived Galarraga of immortality.

Selig will have a statement today, sources said, though it's uncertain whether any ruling will be made today regarding the situation.

The early read is that it probably isn't likely to reverse the call, but MLB powers are considering it.

Joyce's admittedly blown call at first base cost Galarraga a perfect game in his 3-0 victory over the Indians last night.

The missed call has re-raised the issue of expanded instant replay, as well. Selig has in the past been against the expansion of instant replay.

1. Leaked excerpt:
If the umpires would just take more steroids, these situations wouldn't happen.

7. I agree with the bad precedent argument..

I mean, it's unfortunate but bad calls happen. Denkinger probably cost the Cards the WS in '85..should we go back and change that? What about the outrageously bad call last year which cost Lincecum a complete game victory against the Dodgers? There are hundreds of examples of bad umpiring decisions.

My point is, once the commissioner starts retroactively changing calls...where does it end?

8. It ends when instant replay review becomes common practice
And that should be ASAP. It shouldn't be too hard to implement. A system is already in place to review home runs (just happened in Boston today). I would keep the decision solely with the umpires.

I agree that bad decisions have always been a part of the game. But enough already.

9. And I agree with you
which is very shocking in itself. And Jim Leyland agrees.

I don't want baseball slowed down by reviewing every call. And the Detroit fans will never get the euphoria of the moment back anyway.

10. Yeah, 'cause blown calls that kill perfect games in the 9th with 2 outs...
...happen all the time.

11. It absolutely sets a bad precedent given the current rules. Now change
the rules, this will become a moot point.
