Ubaldo Jimenez vs. the S.F. Giants: "It almost isn't fair"
That was Mike Krukow, S.F. Giants TV announcer, on todays Rockies/Giants games.

If you get a chance, watch this guy throw in the next couple of weeks. The movement he's getting on his fastball is incredible.

I totally get why he's 10-1 with an ERA of 0.78.

Today's score: Rockies 4, Giants 0.

Jimenez went the distance.

1. That is simply amazing
I don't get to watch much baseball aside from the Reds here in Ohio. Might catch a Sunday night game on ESPN here and there, but that's the only time I get a taste of something different.

How long has it been since there's been a 30 game winner in MLB? Is it still possible?

3. With the advent of 5 man rotations the chances of ever seeing another 30 game winner are slim.
25 is possible though.

6. That was in the days of three-man rotations
The Giants' rotation around that time was Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry and Bob Bolin.

If you want "not fair," then the Dodgers had Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Claude Osteen. Any questions about how they won pennants?

7. Highly, HIGHLY Unlikely
Guys only get 32 starts now. You would have to win every game and be pitcher of record in 93.75% of starts.

Just being P.o.R. averages about 80% for a starter.

When McClain won 31 games, he started around 50. He was pitcher of record in about 80%. Had he started only 32 games, he would have won 22 games.

So, it's REALLY hard to even consider a 30 game season. Even 25 is a very difficult task.

8. Bob Welch won 27 in 1990 for the A's
Also the Cy Young award. That was an amazing year. 35 starts. If he had had 50 starts like McClain, who knows....35,36 wins??

9. Yep!
There's been a few others, too. But, boy it would be hard to win even in the high 20's with only 34 or 35 starts. You'd have to win 90% of the games in which you were pitcher of record, 90% of the time. I just don't see that happening. Especially given that a quality start is only 6 innings. One could pitch great, get pulled after 6 with the score 1-0, and then have the relief staff give up a run. Whether the team wins or loses, that guy still doesn't get the win.

Really, really hard.

10. Great thread to see on top of the Sports Forum when I logged in.
He really is having a amazing start ERA wise and I do hope I get a chance to see him pitch with limited opportunities to see the Rockies here in Arizona.

13. I've just seen him pitch a lot this year
so it's just my opinion. I think the Rox announcers mentioned that his control was not as good as it has been at times.
