Wade Miller makes his first Boston start tonight
The replacement pitchers have been doing great to fill the Schilling/Wells void, and Arroyo has been lights-out.

Now Wade Miller's surgically reconstructed arm is on the hill. 5pm. Should be interesting. It's a crappy raw day here.

1. I'm quite excited... I was calling for us to get him, and was thrilled
when we did. And cheap too!

2. Wade Miller was money
for several years here in Deep-In-The-Hearta.

Best of luck to the Bosox and to Wade as he resurrests his career.

4. talk about a FILTHY start
1-2-3 first... broke Ichiro's bat on a ground out to first... then struck out Beltre on a 93 MPH heater to end the inning.

I like this guy...

7. Is his curveball falling
off the table? If it is, he'll be OK. And so will the Sox.

10. Miller looked pretty good tonight, 6 Ks, 3 hits, 2 runs though ..
5 innings. I'm sure they had him on a strict pitch count limit, it being his first start of the season at the big league level. His breaking stuff was really moving, and his fastball was coming in at 92-93mph. The home plate ump seemed to be squeezing the pitchers (both sides) a little bit.

I just wish Francona had picked a different night to debut Meredith.

9. I just got home from the Fenway--the weather wasn't that great...
but the Grand Slam off the rookie (Cla Meredith) was harder to take.

I'm not sure why Francona went with a rookie's debut appearance at that point in the game (they were tied with one on and two out, top of the seventh)---but his hunch didn't pan out. The Sox tried to claw back into it, scoring two in the bottom of the frame, but that was it.

Earlier in the week (Tues. against Detroit) Francona had played another weird gambit by having Mirabelli DH, to load the lineup with righties---that hunch panned out a little better than tonight's.

Tough debut performance for Meredith. :(
